Research Assistant - Youth Criminal Justice LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university. Centre for Economic Performance (CEP) Research Assistant Salary: £36,513 to £41,565 per annum, inclusive with potential to progress to £44,468 per annum inclusive of London allowance. Term: Fixed‑term appointment for 1 year, with scope for further 6‑month extension subject to funding. The Centre for Economic Performance is seeking to appoint a full‑time research assistant (“pre‑doc”) in the education and skills programme for a one‑year period. It will provide assistance on the “Diversion and Structural Change in the Youth Criminal Justice System” project, funded by the Youth Endowment Fund. Additionally, there may be opportunities to work on several associated projects at the CEP related to the education and criminal justice systems in England. Responsibilities Quantitatively analyse data linkage from the UK’s Department for Education and Ministry of Justice (DfE‑MoJ) dataset with a focus on students who have contact with the justice system. Assist with scraping, cleaning, merging and preparation of large micro‑data sources for modelling and analysis. Focus on data and initial analysis under guidance from research supervisors and help model clearly defined areas of analysis. Qualifications Undergraduate degree in Economics or another quantitative discipline, completed by the start date. Master’s degree in Economics or another quantitative science discipline, qualifying for entry into a PhD programme and completed by the start date. Advanced experience in natural language processing and web‑scraping techniques for generating large‑scale micro‑data sets. Advanced experience using Stata or similar statistical software for analysing large‑scale micro‑data sets. Eligibility to work with the confidential administrative data linkage from the UK’s Department for Education and Ministry of Justice in a secure data environment. Ability to perform literature reviews, search for data sources, interpret and analyse patterns or trends in data, and perform data work requiring high accuracy and attention to detail. Strong analytical thinking, ability to devise appropriate economic methods, work independently without close supervision. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to convey complex technical material in clear terms.
