Job Summary We are seeking a Band 7 Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to support the operational management of the general critical care unit at Royal Victoria Infirmary, part of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role is based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and involves caring for patients after complex surgery or medical problems, specialist regional burns care, and critical illness during pregnancy. Key details: Interview date: 6th January 2026 Working pattern: Full‑time, 37 hours 30 minutes per week Contract: Permanent Salary: £47,810 to £54,710 per annum Band: 7 Location: Royal Victoria Infirmary, 317 02, NE1 4LP Main duties of the job Applicants must possess extensive critical care experience and a recognised postgraduate qualification. The successful candidate will coordinate operational delivery and maintain a high standard of care. Job Responsibilities 24‑hour accountability and line management of the department. Ensure appropriate systems and processes are in place for continuity of safe, effective care. Deputise for the Matron as required. Person Specification Essential Evidence of achievement in current post and ongoing professional development. Knowledge of current NHS policy context. Experience leading a nursing team at Senior Nursing/Chief Nursing level or equivalent. Extensive clinical practice or specialist qualification in relevant specialty. Experience of adult/child safeguarding. Audit or research experience. Specialist course in area of practice. Registered Nurse (branch appropriate) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner. Current NMC registration. Degree level knowledge or working toward completion (on pathway). Meets NMC mentoring requirements if relevant. Good IT skills. Intravenous drug administration experience. Desirable Experience developing a nursing team at Senior/Chief level. Master’s degree. Leadership or management qualification.
