Overview Mechanical Maintenance Operative – Salary: £38,000 Mitie Care & Custody (C&C) is establishing HMP Millsike as a place of restoration, reintegration and positive change for prisoners. The role is based at HMP Millsike and is part of a 24/7, 365‑day operation requiring shift work and weekend availability. Responsibilities Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on plant and building services. Ensure Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) standards are maintained and liaise with engineers and subcontractors. Complete all maintenance documentation accurately and on time. Investigate and report infrastructure shortfalls, problems and incidents, and recommend remedial actions. Coordinate connections to existing plant/systems and maintain O&M manuals and quality procedures. Work to a shift rota pattern and respond to out‑of‑hours call‑out functions. Comply with company and statutory regulations relating to health and safety, hygiene, cleaning and fire procedures. Qualifications Relevant certificate: Apprenticeship or equivalent, IOSH or equivalent, C&G/BTEC Mechanical and Electrical Building Services Engineering Parts 1‑3, NVQ Level 3 multi‑skilled engineering, C&G 2079 F Gas, HVAC or gas equivalent, or C&G 2391/2 18th edition IEE regulations. Previous experience providing electrical maintenance services in a large, complex environment. Basic to intermediate IT skills – proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook, and experience updating records. Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to take accurate notes. Self‑motivation, excellent interpersonal skills and a team‑oriented attitude. Comprehensive knowledge of building services disciplines: heating, hot water, ventilation, refrigeration, environmental, electrical power and distribution, and public health. Team worker with flexibility within contracted hours and a proactive nature. UK citizen, Commonwealth citizen with indefinite leave to remain (not through marriage) or EEA citizen; valid full‑date passport; continuous UK residence for the past 3 years; no overseas stay >3 months; not bankrupt; exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, prepared for Enhanced DBS, employer referencing and Counter‑Terrorist Checked (CTC) vetting.
