Job Summary An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Phlebotomy team, based across both The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospital sites. As a phlebotomist, you'll play a vital role in patient care by collecting blood samples safely and accurately to support diagnosis and treatment. You'll be a reassuring presence for patients, combining technical skill with compassion to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Job Details Position: 1x30 hours per week, flexible – working across both the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen sites. Working hours: rota basis between 7am–5.30pm Mon‑Fri, 8am–1pm Sat‑Sun, and Bank Holidays. Location: Liverpool Clinical Laboratories, Liverpool, L7 8YE. Band: 2 | Salary: £24,465 a year | Contract: Permanent | Working pattern: Full‑time | Reference number: 287‑LCL‑71‑25‑A Posted: 11 December 2025 Job Responsibilities VENEPUNCTURE: Collect samples of potentially hazardous blood into appropriate containers. Ensure patients consent to the procedure and check patient identification against the request form. Accurate labelling of samples to confirm patient identity in line with local and national guidelines. Ensure samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories using the internal hospital vacuum pod system or by liaising with porters. Work one‑to‑one with patients and without direct supervision. Report anomalies to a senior member of staff. Practice infection control procedures such as ANTT (antiseptic non‑touch technique). Assess and dress venepuncture site. Maintain a clean and stocked workstation at all times. Handle potentially contaminated bodily fluids (e.g., urine, faeces, sputum). COMMUNICATION: Liaise with doctors and nursing staff regarding request forms. Show empathy and understanding of patient needs, including coping with needle phobias. Encourage reluctant patients to undergo venepuncture. Reassure distressed patients and their relatives. Adapt procedures for patients with mental or physical disabilities and respect religious boundaries. Use diplomacy and only disclose information that has been previously explained by the medical practitioner. Communicate with ward staff to confirm patient fasting or medication status when relevant. Answer telephone enquiries and provide relevant information or transfer the call to the appropriate person. Understand the procedures and the need for liaison with laboratories to ensure certain tests are carried out as per recognised procedure. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Ensure yearly training (e.g., fire lectures, manual handling, mandatory training sessions relevant to the post). MANAGING SELF: Attend training lectures, study days and workshops as required or per Manager’s instruction. Read all relevant training literature provided. Maintain awareness of departmental, hospital and national policies and Health and Safety guidelines. Person Specification Qualifications (Essential) NVQ 2 / GCSE or equivalent. Experience (Essential) Ability to work as a team member. Ability to work on own initiative under supervision. Ability to adapt to various working situations. Desirable Previous experience of venepuncture. Skills (Essential) Ability to communicate effectively with individuals.
