Principal Power Electronics Engineer – Thales UK Location: Belfast or Crawley Thales UK designs and manufactures a range of cutting‑edge technologies for air surveillance, mission planning, and missile systems. The Role As a Principal Power Electronics Engineer you will mentor and guide others in the design of electronic and electrical power systems that deliver world‑class performance. You will work alongside a multi‑disciplinary team of 35 electronics engineers and span the entire product lifecycle – from design requirements capture and analysis to power architecture definition, design, build, test and verification. Responsibilities Develop electrical power architectures to meet design requirements Lead design and prototype development of power electronics circuits Use simulation tools to model electronic and electrical power systems Lead component and sub‑system selection and manage evaluation activities Define testing, validation and debugging of component and circuit assemblies Support integration testing Create power electronics specifications, development and verification plans Ensure compliance with regulatory standards Contribute to bid and estimating activities Skills, Experience and Knowledge Required Relevant Engineering, Scientific or Numerate degree Experience with selection and evaluation of MOTs AD‑DC and DC‑DC converters Significant experience of SMPS design Knowledge of electrical power systems and distribution, including: 600 VDC Single phase 240 VAC Three‑phase 400 VAC Battery systems using lead‑acid or lithium batteries Power filter design and implementation Thermal management techniques Simulation tools such as LTSpice and modeller of converters Regulatory standards for power electronics and safety certifications LVD & EMC compliance principles Excellent communication within a diverse, professional environment Outstanding team‑working skills Experience mentoring and coaching others Nice to Haves Knowledge of Military Vehicular GVA power architectures Experience designing equipment for safety‑critical environments Chartership with a relevant professional institution (e.g. IET, IEEE) Security Clearance Statement This role requires SC clearance. If you already hold clearance that is advantageous, otherwise the successful applicant must obtain, achieve and maintain SC clearance.
