Technical Author – Slaughterhouses & Animal By‑Products – UKBAT – 32429 Environment Agency Job Description As a Technical Author in the UK BAT team you will play a key role in defining and communicating best‑practice environmental standards for large slaughterhouses and animal‑by‑product installations across the UK. You will draft BAT conclusions, liaise with technical working groups and produce concise, authoritative documents that become new UK‑wide environmental standards. This role requires specialist industry knowledge, a strong grasp of process engineering and environmental legislation, and the ability to analyse technical arguments and produce clear written outputs. Responsibilities Draft BAT conclusions and technical documents suitable for publication as industry standards. Liaise with technical working groups and stakeholders to gather evidence and build consensus. Analyse and critically evaluate technical data and arguments. Write, edit and review technical documents ensuring clarity, accuracy and compliance with policy. Manage projects, set priorities and meet deadlines. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and support the development of incident‑management objectives. Travel and overnight stays may be required to meet project needs. Experience / Skills Required Minimum 5 years of working experience in the slaughterhouse or animal‑by‑products sector. Solid understanding of UK and EU environmental legislation, particularly the IED and Environmental Permitting Regulations. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to collect, analyse and interpret complex industrial data. Experience dealing with the implications of BAT conclusions on permits, industry and the environment. Strong relationship‑building and networking abilities. Planning, prioritising and organising tasks to achieve timely results. Adaptability to challenges and consensus‑building.
