SCF in Paediatric Kidney Transplant and Dialysis Access Surgery The closing date is 01 December 2025 This post will provide excellent experience in all forms of kidney transplant surgery and dialysis access surgery in children. The post would be suitable for:- general surgical trainees, in particular those with an interest in paediatric renal transplantation- vascular or urological trainees seeking to understand the theoretical and practical aspects of managing the paediatric renal failure population. The post will provide experience suitable for either Phase 2 or Phase 3 of the ISCP General Surgery curriculum. Doctors who have gained Certificate of Completion of Training looking to gain subspecialty training are encouraged to apply. Training in both standard and complex paediatric kidney transplant and dialysis access surgery will be provided by working alongside experienced Consultants. There is a significant emphasis on multidisciplinary team working across all sites, especially with paediatric nephrology, interventional radiology and anaesthetic colleagues. Responsibilities of the post will include service development, quality improvement and audit work and research experience in local and national research projects. Main duties of the job As part of the on-call rota the post-holder will also participate in the adult kidney and pancreas transplant programmes at Guy's Hospital, providing a complete experience in renal replacement therapy surgery. About us The Department of Nephrology and Transplantation at Guy's Hospital is one of the largest in the UK, providing kidney care to adults in South East London, neighbouring areas of Kent and the Channel Islands. The transplant surgical department also provides paediatric kidney transplant and dialysis access surgical services to children at Evelina London Children's Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. We perform 40-60 paediatric kidney transplants per year, approximately one-third of the entire UK programme. We work closely with paediatric nephrologists in London and Southampton, and perform kidney transplants at King's College Hospital as part of the paediatric simultaneous liver‑kidney transplant programme there. Members of the paediatric transplant surgical team also provide renovascular surgical services at Evelina London Children's Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. Our nephrology colleagues offer a full range of peritoneal and haemodialysis therapies both at home and in hospital, and we provide surgical services to enable dialysis access creation, e.g., arteriovenous fistula formation and peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion. Live donor nephrectomy services are provided by transplant surgical colleagues at Guy's Hospital. We are nationally and internationally recognised for quality of care, innovation in clinical practice and service delivery. Job responsibilities Clinical: The post holder will, along with other resident doctor colleagues, be responsible for: a. Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required (Evelina London Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, King's College Hospital). b. Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff. Timetable: The exact timetable would be determined after discussion with the Lead for Paediatric Transplant Surgery and other colleagues as needed, to consider the educational needs of the post holder along with those of other resident surgical colleagues. However broadly speaking it would involve the following: a. Participation in paediatric transplant assessment, transplant follow-up, and dialysis access assessment clinics b. Participation in paediatric transplant, dialysis access and renovascular operating lists c. Ward rounds of children at Evelina London Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and King's College Hospital d. Preparation for, and attendance at, paediatric MDMs On call commitment: The post holder will undertake a 1 in 12 (or higher) resident on call rota at band 1C (TBC). This will be resident on call. This will involve covering dialysis and transplant patients based at Guys & St Thomas sites. Please note the banding of the rota is subject to change and will be confirmed at the interview stage. Research: Clinical research undertaken as part of the Trust's research and development will be encouraged. Training of junior staff: The post holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that the post holder has agreed with their supervising consultant. Teaching: The post holder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Clinical Governance: All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal. Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours: There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements. European Working Time Directive (EWTD): All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with EWTD guidelines Educational Programme: Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College accredits this post for postgraduate training. The post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g., departmental meetings, x-ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc. All medical and dental staff are required to undertake appraisal.
