Overview Colchester Hospital is looking for a Locum Emergency General Surgeon with experience in the laparoscopic and robotic approaches to general and colorectal surgery. The successful candidate will become part of the acute general surgical team and may be considered for a substantive role earlier than the 12‑month period if satisfactory progress is made. Qualifications Experience in laparoscopic and robotic general surgery, including colorectal procedures. Training in laparoscopic/robotic general surgery. Must be registered with the GMC. Strong enthusiasm for laparoscopic surgery. Ability to publish research (preferred). Commitment to teaching. Experience or training in advanced laparoscopic emergency general surgery (preferred). Responsibilities Provide cover as a general surgeon. Deliver general surgery services including proctology, diverticular disease, complex abdominal wall hernia, laparoscopic hernia surgery and other benign pathology. Opportunity for mentoring and training in preferred fields. Provide colorectal input into joint operating with gynaecology endometriosis surgeons. Issue advice to GPs on suitability of patients for admission to hospital. Collaborate with the multi‑professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines. Develop and maintain good working practices with wards, out‑patients and the ED. Promote close working links with colleagues, other departments and primary care. Offer educational, clinical support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi‑disciplinary team. Ensure appropriate information is made available to staff to measure clinical performance and enable meaningful benchmarks. Ensure a robust process for reviewing the quality of services, explaining causes of success and failure, and maintaining the highest standards. Provide a role model of professional leadership aligned with corporate values and behaviours; take remedial action where poor behaviour is demonstrated. Ensure junior doctors’ training conforms to College requirements. Participate in appraisal of medical staff within the department in line with the Trust’s agreed policy. Become part of the ICENI teaching faculty in delivering or facilitating courses/programmes. Participate in the general surgery emergency daytime on‑call (1 in 12) and out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (1 in 12). Additional Conditions Potential for earlier move to substantive status if satisfactory progress and a successful interview occur before 12 months. Secondment: If interested, discuss with your current line manager before applying. Fixed‑term roles for current ESNEFT employees are offered only on a secondment basis.
