Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Clinical Safety Officer Closing date is 10 December 2025 Digital Clinical Safety Officers will support the Clinical Director of Digital Safety (CDDS) in the Safety stream of the Department of Digital Medicine in short‑ and long‑term planning for the safe implementation and deployment of digital systems and devices. This role cuts across all Trust digital projects and implementations and offers an exciting opportunity for professionals with a grounding in clinical informatics or for those with the necessary experience who want to develop this area of practice. Candidates must be clinically trained, registered with the relevant professional body, and be a specialist in their current field with responsibility for clinical training and supervision as well as experience in clinical audit and research. The specialist Clinical Risk Management training certificate provided by NHS Digital is required or being pursued. Main duties of the job Support the CDDS in the creation of clinical safety management records associated with the maintenance of the standards DCB0129 and DCB0160. Contribute to baseline metrics of systems to both qualitatively and quantitatively measure compliance with D0129 and DCB0160. Maintain clinical expertise operating within practitioner boundaries of competence, ensuring professional registration is maintained. Ensure clinical and non‑clinical staff engagement and consultation in relation to the safe deployment of clinical IT systems. Contribute to long‑term planning of digital projects and to wider Department of Digital Medicine planning. Contribute to the formulation of project budgets and to the overall budget of the department of digital medicine. Contribute to wider organisational objectives, pathway developments and long‑term planning in relation to digital systems. Become a lead specialist in Digital Clinical Safety through practical experience, attendance at conferences and Digital Clinical Safety training events. Organise and deliver training for clinical and non‑clinical staff on new processes identified by digital clinical safety evaluation. Intervene directly where safety issues are identified and raise these through appropriate channels, including with the CDDS. Job responsibilities Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, including the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) and the Trust’s Information Governance Policy. Maintain patient safety and system reliability by identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with digital clinical technologies. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to conduct safety reviews, incident investigations, and root‑cause analyses. Advise management on the feasibility of digital projects and recommend cancellation if safety standards cannot be met. Support infection control and data protection practices within digital clinical environments. Document and report safety incidents, trends, and improvement actions to the incident panel and senior management. Provide leadership and mentorship to clinical staff on digital safety principles. Represent the Trust in external safety forums, conferences, and training events. Person Specification Qualifications Professional qualification and registration in one of the clinical health professions and registration with the relevant governing body (e.g., GOC, GMC, NMC). Qualifications in clinical informatics, for example NHS Digital Academy or affiliation with the Faculty of Clinical Informatics. Experience Currently working at Agenda for Change Band 7 or above. Substantial experience in the use of various hospital systems, devices, and IT applications including OpenEyes, PAS, Forum, CITO, Heyex, Pathology, and devices such as biometers, anterior and posterior segment OCT. Professional leadership experience (clinical, educational, or governance lead). Experience in handling incidents and reporting to an incident panel. Experience with hospital activity data and data analysis. Analytical Experience in gathering and in‑depth analysis of data (e.g., audit or research). Practical experience of Moorfields’ clinical information systems. Communication Strong communicator, able to convey complex ideas and have difficult conversations with key stakeholders. Experience of discussions at senior management level. Leadership Skills Strong presentation skills (conference, teaching, clinical training) and ability to demonstrate leadership skills including gaining the support of others, tackling difficult issues, logical problem solving, follow‑through and engagement with all staff regardless of professional background. Current clinical supervisory or leadership role.
