Overview We have fantastic opportunities for experienced neonatal nurses who are looking to develop their careers. We are a tertiary referral centre incorporating 20 NICU, 12 HDU and 14 special care cots. We provide an unrivalled breadth of experience, caring for babies with surgical, cardiac, neurological, renal and metabolic disorders as well as those born prematurely. We provide excellent development opportunities for Band 6 Neonatal Nurses and a structured Band 6 Management Programme to support leadership skills and career progression. Unit Overview We are a large supportive neonatal team who take pride in the high standards of care that we deliver, as demonstrated by the positive outcomes of the infants we care for. We are one of the biggest and busiest neonatal units in the country and can offer a wealth of experience to enhance your career as a neonatal nurse. Responsibilities Assess and meet the care needs of patients, plan, implement and evaluate care programmes without direct supervision. Develop practice on the ward, working independently or autonomously and at times without supervision, while being accountable for professional actions. Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care. Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, including history taking, physical examination and ordering agreed diagnostic procedures. Administer prescribed medication correctly, including transfusion of blood and blood products. Assess and recognise emergencies, interpret information, take appropriate action and lead others to do the same. Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring a patient‑oriented approach to care and meeting NHS Plan standards and other guidelines. Ensure patients receive high‑quality clinical care and a good patient experience, respecting customs, religious beliefs and doctrines. Identify and avoid situations detrimental to patient health and wellbeing. Provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in planning, delivering and evaluating individualised care. Be wholly accountable for practice in line with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, continually improving knowledge and competence. Deliver safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced clinical skills and perform specialist nursing procedures as required. Ensure sensitive patient records are stored appropriately. Recognise and accommodate cultural and spiritual needs within available resources. Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions about treatment and management. Participate in case conferences to coordinate ongoing care. Minimise cross‑infection risk by ensuring safe disposal of body fluids, including blood. Support patients and carers during the delivery of bad news, such as caring for terminally ill patients and the event of death.
