Join to apply for the Higher Scientist - Underwater Acoustics role at National Physical Laboratory (NPL). Overview We are recruiting a Higher Scientist to work in the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group within the Underwater Acoustics area. The successful candidate will be a graduate in Physics, Acoustics or a related discipline, with experience in industry, academia or a postgraduate qualification. Role & Responsibilities As an Acoustical Higher Scientist, you will acquire new knowledge to find solutions to advance our research, requiring a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail. If commercial opportunities arise, you will flag these as new products and services. You will deliver measurement services, contribute to research and development projects, and publish scientific outputs. Develop improved techniques for underwater acoustic measurement and calibration using specialised laboratory facilities such as laboratory tanks and an acoustics pressure vessel. Develop experimental techniques for acoustic measurement for delivery to customers and collaborators. Deliver NPL’s scientific work, including measurement services and contributing to research and development projects. Contribute to scientific outputs through journal publications and scientific conferences. Share learnings and mentor less experienced colleagues. Develop partnerships to strengthen our capability. Act as an ambassador for our work externally and promote what we do. Provide technical support for any bids we may undertake. Qualifications & Experience To be successful you should have a science‑related degree and be an expert in your field. You should also be used to leading, planning, and delivering complex research projects from conception to fruition. Underpinning knowledge of the underlying physical principles. Demonstrable experience and track record for precise experimental work. Aptitude for critical thinking and problem solving. Strong personal motivation, the ability to interact, collaborate, and network with colleagues and future customers. Ability to work towards deadlines in a busy environment. Good communication skills, both verbal and written. Nice to Have Knowledge of acoustics and/or marine acoustic technology. Experience in data analysis techniques. Familiarity with systems engineering. Experience with software packages such as Matlab and LabView. Other Information To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance. For this role, an SC clearance with no restrictions is required, or you must have the ability to obtain an SC clearance.
