Teddington, Greater London, United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory Full time

We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist to join the Measurement Services team within NPL's Dimensional Metrology Group.

The Dimensional Metrology Group is a world leader in delivering dimensional measurements, together with research and development of new techniques and novel instruments. We focus on the measurement of 'length' – including distance, displacement, position, dimensions, size, area, volume and surface texture – over length scales from picometres to hundreds of metres. We support a wide range of industrial and research sectors in conforming to precise dimensional requirements by providing the fundamental length measurement infrastructure for the UK, 'realising' the metre, and disseminating the length scale to users across the UK and beyond.

You'll join our knowledgeable and friendly team of engineering measurement professionals and be expected to carry out measurement and calibration services for a range of customers.

You'll be accountable for:

  • Operating measurement equipment
  • Reporting results
  • Completing associated paperwork to meet the needs of our quality system
  • You may be involved in equipment maintenance, data checking/approval and measurement procedure updates

We are recruiting across levels and will consider applications from candidates with varied experience. Offer and salary will depend on experience.

The role requires either good science A Levels or equivalent vocational qualifications, and preferably higher educational qualifications or laboratory experience.

For the role at the Scientist level, a physics degree / equivalent qualifications or directly relevant laboratory experience is required. Strong practical, numerical and team working skills are essential.

Skills and Experience you can bring to the role:

  • Good hands-on practical skills
  • The ability to work to procedures, and to record and check numerical test results
  • Some prior experience of working in a laboratory environment
  • The ability to work alone whilst operating equipment, but also to work well within a team

We would also welcome the following experience:

  • Engineering measurement services or equipment calibration services
  • Working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory
  • Data analysis

We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.

Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.
