Financial Accountant

Financial Accountant Reports to: Financial Controller Department: Finance, Support Centre, Manchester Overview We are looking for a highly skilled and detail-oriented Financial Accountant to join our Finance team. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in accounting and audit practices, with a deep understanding of HMRC regulations, VAT, and Excise Duty compliance. Experience in managing foreign exchange, investments, and cash flow would be helpful. This is a pivotal role in maintaining financial integrity, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving efficient financial operations. Main Duties Audit & Financial Reporting Lead the internal and external audit processes, including preparation of audit schedules and liaison with auditors. Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records in compliance with accounting standards. Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end accounts and supporting reconciliations. Taxation & HMRC Compliance Prepare and submit accurate VAT returns and ensure compliance with Excise Duty regulations. Serve as the main point of contact for HMRC queries and audits. Keep abreast of tax legislation and ensure internal controls align with current laws. Foreign Exchange & Treasury Monitor and report on foreign exchange exposures and execute hedging strategies where appropriate. Assist with the management of cash positions across currencies to optimise working capital. Investments & Cash Flow Execute, track and reconcile money market investments. Prepare detailed cash flow forecasts and variance analysis. Provide recommendations to improve capital efficiency. Compliance & Controls Maintain and improve financial controls, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations. Support the implementation of financial and operational compliance frameworks. Assist in the preparation and submission of statutory filings and regulatory reports. Finance System Development Play a key role in the review of any Finance systems; assessing capability, effectiveness and future proofing. Support with the implementation of any new finance systems. Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent). Minimum 2 years' post-qualification experience in a financial accounting role. Strong knowledge of UK tax rules, including VAT and Excise Duties. Experience dealing with HMRC and audit processes. Proficiency in financial systems.
