Consultant Gastroenterologist and Clinical Transformation Lead This is a replacement Consultant post. The role is split between designing and leading the implementation of transformation programmes as the Clinical Transformation Lead and providing clinical care within the Gastroenterology department. The clinical remit will be to work within a multidisciplinary team providing and further developing care for Gastroenterology with a focus on general gastroenterology, including IBD and nutrition. The appointee will contribute to the existing strengths and develop their own complementary areas of expertise depending on interests, ability and experience. The incumbent will also play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group and have a significant commitment to teaching and training junior staff. Main Duties Provision of a first‑class clinical service Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London / KHP Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust About the Trust King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK's largest and busiest teaching Trusts, with a turnover of £1.8bn per annum. London Zone Allowance) Contract: Permanent Working pattern: Full‑time Reference number: 213-MED-DH-7645462 Job locations: Denmark Hill, London, SE5 9RS Responsibilities Medical Student TeachingThe appointed practitioner will normally participate in teaching medical students, post‑graduate doctors/dentists and other groups at King's College Hospital NHSFT and King's College London School of Medicine. All consultants are expected to be committed to teaching and to play their part in the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum. Activities include planning, reviewing, and assessing students, concurrently with service delivery commitments. Post‑Graduate TeachingThe postholder will be expected to participate in teaching and training postgraduate doctors/dentists, providing supervision and supporting appraisal. Consultants undertaking educational supervision receive appropriate training and accreditation. Time for postgraduate education is normally job planned. Research and InnovationInvolvement in high‑quality research is strongly encouraged. The Trust’s Research and Development strategy supports leading clinical research. The postholder should contribute to research activity, support recruitment, and maintain knowledge of governance standards and GCP training. Clinical GovernanceThe postholder will contribute to and participate in the Care Group’s audit and quality improvement programmes, and carry out administrative duties related to patient care, health and safety, and clinical governance accountability. Continuing Professional DevelopmentThe postholder will comply with CPD requirements, arranging study leave and continuing professional development. Annual leave entitlements and arrangements are governed by Trust policies. Other DutiesThe postholder is expected to undertake routine job‑planned work on Saturdays or Sundays with appropriate planning, compliance with safeguarding responsibilities, infection control, and participation in appraisal and job planning as required by NHS regulations. Person Specification Essential Qualifications Registerable medical qualification Full MRCP Desirable Qualifications Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD) Essential Registration Full Registration with GMC Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment Training and Experience Wide experience in all aspects of Gastroenterology, culminating in a Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC Epic clinician builder certification Demonstrable experience in directing and leading clinical transformation projects within the NHS Strong understanding of clinical workflows, safety and quality improvement methodologies Experience of implementing large‑scale digital clinical transformation and change projects within a large NHS service, achieving measurable results Able to help set and sustain pace of complex clinical change Successful supervisory, coaching and mentoring experience Desirable Formal training in clinical informatics, health IT or improvement science Experience with Epic optimisation and governance frameworks Knowledge of population health, data analytics or AI applications in healthcare Clear understanding of operational/clinical objectives while supporting people through change Administration Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of Gastroenterology services in a busy Teaching Hospital Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills Familiar with current structure of UK National Health Service and recent initiatives and changes Management and Leadership Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi‑disciplinary teams Desirable: Management course and/or qualification Audit and Quality Improvement Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit Completed and undertaken audit projects Desirable: Audit publications Research and Publications Understanding of clinical research Desirable: Relevant research experience in Gastroenterology, ideally with a focus on IBD; research publications Teaching Experience of undergraduate and post‑graduate teaching and exam preparation Desirable: Teaching skills course/qualification Job Specific Criteria Experience working in partnership with clinical and operational colleagues to deliver measurable improvements Demonstrates ability to quickly gain confidence of senior executives, clinicians and operational staff Disclosure and Barring Service Check The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
