Senior Clinical Coder – Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Job Summary An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Coding department at Hampshire Hospitals for an ACC qualified coder. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm and motivation to join our well established and busy Clinical Coding Department. Main duties of the job Clinical Coding is a unique department within NHS Hospitals supporting Business Intelligence and Finance teams within Hampshire Hospitals. The Clinical Coding team works hard to provide an efficient, reliable, and effective service to the Trust by abstracting information from various clinical documents and translating it into diagnostic and procedure codes. The post holder will be responsible for managing the volume of uncoded activity in assigned specialties against agreed deadlines, participating in coding audits, and assisting in the provision of high‑quality information to the Trust in a timely and accurate manner. Coders can work on site full time or adopt a hybrid working approach, working part of the day on site and part remotely. Person Specification Essential – Training & Qualifications Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomical and physiological terms acquired through work‑based training Science (Biology preferable) GCSE Grade C or above, or equivalent knowledge Knowledge of coding procedures and conventions, including all specialties in an NHS Acute Hospital environment Desirable – Training & Qualifications Knowledge of encoding systems (e.g., Medicode, etc.) Knowledge of Patient Administration Systems Essential – Experience and Knowledge Analytical and judgemental skills to handle a broad range of complex activities and questions Ability to give judgement when opinions are divided on coding complex cases or previously un‑coded procedures Excellent communication skills, including ability to relate to people at all levels within the organisation Ability to understand, interpret and retain complex clinical written information Prioritise workload in line with personal and team targets Excellent time‑management Desirable – Experience Experience of working in an acute hospital setting Essential – Skills & Ability Able to facilitate effective communication between multi‑disciplinary teams and non‑health care individuals High level of analytical and problem‑solving skills Able to assimilate and disseminate information Ability to work under pressure and prioritise and organise workload to meet challenging deadlines Able to concentrate for prolonged periods Ability to deal effectively with frequent interruptions Essential – Other Specific Requirements Self‑motivated with the ability to work under pressure and deliver to tight timescales Able to prioritise commitments Desirable – Other Specific Requirements Ability to motivate, train and develop others Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and a submission for Disclosure will be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
