Clinical/Forensic/Counselling Psychologist or Psychological Therapist Apply for the Clinical/Forensic/Counselling Psychologist or Psychological Therapist role at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust Job Overview This is an exciting opportunity for a newly (or soon to be) qualified Band 7 psychological therapist to work in the London Women’s Mental Health Treatment Requirement (MHTR) Service. The service is part of the London Pathways Partnership (LPP) led by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with CNWL NHS Foundation Trust and Together for Mental Wellbeing. MHTRs aim to reduce custodial sentences, improve wellbeing and address mental health needs associated with offending. MHTRs were introduced by the Criminal Justice Act in 2003 and help address mental health and substance misuse underlying offending behaviour. The service aims to increase the use of MHTRs as part of a community sentence and provides both primary‑care level services and secondary care pilot sites for pathway testing. Main Duties of the Job Assessment of women prior to sentencing to consider suitability for an MHTR Holding a caseload and providing short‑term psychological interventions for those sentenced to an MHTR Liaison with stakeholders including probation colleagues, court staff and secondary care mental health services Supervision of prequalified staff (trainees and assistant psychologists) and, depending on experience, supervision of qualified staff Involvement in service research, audits and development Working for Our Organisation The LPP provides a comprehensive training package to all staff to promote continuing professional development, including structured professional judgement tools, cultural competency and resilience training. Opportunities exist to develop specialist practice with women, young people or trauma‑informed approaches. NHS Trust vaccination support remains encouraged. Person Specification Education and Qualifications Doctoral level training in clinical, counselling or forensic psychology or equivalent, accredited by the BPS, including training in developmental lifespan, psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology and two or more distinct psychological therapies. HCPC registered as a Practitioner Psychologist. A recognised postgraduate qualification in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (or equivalent). Accreditation with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP) via a recognised core mental‑health profession qualification. A recorded/registered qualification in counselling or psychotherapy and further post‑accreditation qualification in a NICE‑recommended or evidence‑based therapy (e.g., CBT; EMDR). Accreditation with a Professional Standards Authority recognised accreditation body. Other relevant CPD qualifications, especially training in working with trauma presentations, research methodology, staff training or other applied psychology fields. Training in more than one psychological therapy. Experience Essential criteria Specialist psychological assessment and treatment across the full range of care settings (outpatient, community, primary care, inpatient). Experience working with diverse client groups across the whole life course and presenting a range of clinical severities, maintaining professionalism amidst emotive, distressing, verbal and physical abuse situations. Experience treating personality disorder, self‑harm, substance misuse and complex trauma. Experience delivering brief, primary‑care CBT or equivalent interventions. Effective multidisciplinary team working. Teaching and training experience. Desirable criteria Application of psychology in different cultural and specialist contexts. Work in secure settings (prison or secure hospitals). Development of peer‑facilitated support or treatment initiatives with service users. Use of a trauma‑informed approach. Supervision of others in psychological therapy delivery. Skills & Knowledge Essential criteria Skills in complex psychological assessment and intervention requiring sustained concentration. Ability to provide training, advice, psychological information and consultation to professional and non‑professional groups. High‑level knowledge of research methodology and design, including complex multivariate data analysis. Broad knowledge of assessment, management and treatment of mentally disordered and PD offenders. Capacity to work intensively with individuals presenting sexual, violent, self‑harm or suicidal behaviours. Knowledge of specialised psychological therapies for difficult‑to‑treat groups (e.g., personality disorder, dual diagnoses). Desirable criteria High‑level knowledge of at least two specialised psychological therapies. Knowledge of legislation relating to client groups and mental health. Attitudes, Aptitudes & Personal Characteristics Essential criteria Ability to teach and train others using multi‑media materials for public, professional and academic settings. Willingness to work flexibly to meet contract, commissioner and stakeholder demands. Good understanding of current NHS service provision context. Capacity to work in a secure environment, following HMPS policy and maintaining enhanced security clearance. Mechanisms for clinical governance to support mastery amid emotive material and challenging behaviour. Desirable criteria Experience working within a multicultural framework.
