Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant – Level 2 (Fixed Term) Woodlawn Primary School, Woodlown, UK Responsibilities The role involves assisting and supporting teaching and learning by working with individuals or groups of pupils. The postholder will play a crucial part in ensuring the general care, safety, and welfare of all pupils, contributing to the assessment of pupil needs and progress, and developing and implementing tailored support plans. The main duties include: Contributing to curriculum planning and evaluation for all children, including SEND, and assisting in implementation. Assisting the delivery of lessons/sessions and interacting with the teacher and pupil as required. Undertaking agreed learning activities or teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses. Supporting pupils individually or in groups, including those with SEND, during independent or group work, explaining tasks, reinforcing key objectives, and extending more able pupils. Providing occasional support to the whole class, such as story reading. Helping pupils develop communication, inclusion, and independence skills, including the use of ICT to develop their competence and independence. Assisting with the development and implementation of IEPs/behaviour plans and personal care plans. Using specialist skills/knowledge/training to provide support in specialist areas and encouraging positive interactions. Monitoring pupil behaviour, identifying and reporting uncharacteristic behaviour patterns, and assisting with supervision on trips off the premises. Co‑working with the teacher/SENDCo on lesson planning, delivery, and assessment, including contributing to pupil assessment through observation and reporting. Managing routine administrative tasks such as producing worksheets, photocopying, and filing, and marking pupils’ work as directed by the class teacher. Establishing positive relationships with parents/carers, specialist teachers, and other professional staff. Safeguarding and compliance with enhanced DBS checks are mandatory, and the post holder will be expected to adhere to trust policies and general duties of employment. Essential Qualifications Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) English and Maths at grade 4 or above. NVQ Level 2 Teaching Assistant or equivalent qualifications. Desirable Qualifications NVQ Level 3 Teaching Assistant. Paediatric first aid training. Essential Experience, Skills and Knowledge Knowledge of child development and learning. Good knowledge and understanding of English/Maths. Strong communication and listening skills, particularly with pupils with additional needs. Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant. Effective use of ICT and technology equipment. Ability to work independently, using initiative when needed. Experience working effectively as part of a team. Positive relationship building with a range of stakeholders. Capability to provide personal care where necessary. Desirable Experience, Skills and Knowledge Additional training in curriculum planning or special educational needs. Understanding of SEND and experience managing challenging behaviour. Essential Personal Qualities Supportive, caring, with integrity and respect. Accountable, patient, and an excellent listener. Calm, especially in challenging situations. Positive, proactive attitude, suggesting solutions and encouraging others. Commitment to confidentiality, flexibility, creativity, and professional growth.
