Mental Health Practitioner – Band 6 Job Summary This role is carried out at Adel Beck Secure Children’s Home, part of the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Trust. The successful candidate will work within the Secure CAMHS team to assess, treat and support young people aged 10‑18 who are either remanded or sentenced by the criminal courts. The position requires establishing therapeutic relationships, risk assessment, and developing holistic care plans in partnership with other professionals and partner agencies. The secure environment runs Monday to Friday 8:00‑8:00 p.m. (12‑hour day). Weekend on‑call duties (telephone, video or face‑to‑face) are also part of the role. All employees are strongly encouraged to be fully vaccinated against COVID‑19 to protect patients. Working Pattern Full‑time, Flexible working Salary £38,682 to £46,580 per year (Band 6) Contract Permanent Job Responsibilities Provide assessment and treatment to children and young people with mental health needs, including routine and urgent interventions. Work autonomously and collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team (MDT), offering consultation for other agencies and professionals. Participate in the CAMHS first on‑call rota and weekend on‑call service. Promote the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people. Deliver evidence‑based assessment, intervention, and therapy to young people with severe, complex, or persistent mental health problems, including those at suicidal risk. Support families as an autonomous practitioner and as part of the MDT across various settings. Apply safeguarding knowledge and statutory guidance in all clinical work. Maintain a quality approach to patient care, with high levels of concentration and sustained effort. Manage own caseload and seek appropriate support and guidance. Operate within the clinical and case‑management supervision framework. Provide training, consultation, and supervision to other service providers, partner agencies, and junior staff on intensive interventions. Participate in service development, audit, and review, and pursue extended hours when required. Collaborate with all services to offer coherent, coordinated mental health care, ensuring timely transition and relevant consultation, training, and support. Use information technology systems (including Rio and System One) to collect, store, and protect data securely. Engage in an agreed clinical audit programme and report lessons learned. Comply with clinical and corporate governance frameworks. Support stakeholder engagement in service delivery improvement and redesign. Promote user/carer involvement in care planning and delivery, respecting rights and wishes. Work in an innovative, child‑centred, and continuous‑improvement culture. Apply Trust policies in aggression, acute distress, and disturbed mental health presentations. Maintain relevant professional registration and pursue ongoing professional development. Identify and communicate concerns through relevant management processes. Engage in annual appraisal and continuous practice development. Person Specification Experience (Essential) Substantial post‑qualification experience, including working with children, young people and their carers in a complex care setting. Multidisciplinary team working. Inter‑agency liaison and consultation. Experience in patient provision. Experience of liaison between different levels of CAMHS. Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance (NHS plan, Mental Health Legislation, Children Act, Education Act, Working Together, Children’s NSF, Every Child Matters etc.). Clinical/therapeutic knowledge and skills in mental health and behavioural problems, including assessment, risk management and evidence‑based practice. Understanding of research methodology and audit. Proven ability to work with other disciplines and in partnership with other organisations, including service users. Experience (Desirable) Experience in community settings. Previous experience in a CAMHS setting. Training (Essential) Training and experience relating to specialist CAMHS. Special Knowledge & Skills (Essential) Good verbal and communication skills. Negotiation and problem‑solving skills. Customer‑service orientation. Report‑writing skills. Team‑working skills; ability to predict and manage inter‑disciplinary tensions and foster good working practices. Qualifications (Essential) Relevant professional qualification (nursing, psychologist, psychotherapist, family therapist, or other allied health professional). Post‑qualification professional development. Ongoing professional development, supervision and/or mentorship. Membership of professional bodies. Qualifications (Desirable) Post‑registration qualification (degree). Post‑graduate qualification in mental health (e.g., CBT, Family Therapy, Counselling).
