You will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute medical conditions, ensuring that they receive a 'second-to-none' standard of care from admission to discharge. You will work closely with other consultants, resident doctors, and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure patient pathways operate unhindered. Main duties of the job The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic department known for taking a hands‑on role in service development, quality improvement, education and training. In December 2022, we opened the doors to our brand new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) that boasts 36 assessment spaces, split across level 2 and level 3, and that houses our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility. We also take responsibility for additional Acute Medicine capacity on our 24 bed EAU4 (Emergency Assessment Unit). The team is responsible for the care of patients across these areas alongside providing an Acute Medicine in‑reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours. Acute Medicine is well known as a nurturing and supportive department both for senior medical staff and for doctors in training. We work collaboratively with the well‑established multidisciplinary teams of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and discharge co‑ordinators on our Emergency Assessment Unit and Acute Medical Unit, all of which maintain a strong culture of safety and professionalism. Person Specification Qualifications & Training Full GMC Registration (with licence to practice) CCT Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS or graduate of a UK Medical School CESR Distinctions, scholarships, prizes Other degrees, e.g. BSc, MSc, MD At least three years in Higher Training in Acute Medicine or other medical specialty ALS Knowledge and Experience Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients Ability to prioritise clinical need Ability to supervise multi-disciplinary teams Specific Skills Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the department Ability to demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of NHS structures, management and current political issues, including awareness of national strategic plans and constraints Ability to demonstrate willingness to lead clinical teams and develop an effective specialist clinical service Experience of Audit and Management Evidence of innovative development and implementation of guidance Evidence of involving patients in practice.
