Planning Manager – Balfour Beatty plc Lead the strategic planning and scheduling of multiple construction projects at Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D). Ensure alignment with organisational goals, optimising project timelines, resource allocation and coordination across a portfolio of substation projects. Responsibilities Identify planning scope, major constraints and contract requirements, and determine key quantities and factors affecting the programme. Lead the collaborative development and agreement on a logical sequence and methodology, overseeing the planning team and ensuring the adoption of the most efficient design, procurement and construction strategy. Oversee the development of key deliverables such as programmes, planning philosophy, presentations and reports. Guide planners in formulating Tender Programmes and ensuring alignment with organisational goals. Provide strategic guidance throughout the contract stage, supervising the Senior Planner and the planning team in producing, managing and maintaining the Contract Programme. Display and evaluate the project critical path, advise the project team on results and corrective action, maintain project baselines and execute the change control process as appropriate. Manage labour, equipment and materials efficiently to meet project objectives while minimising costs and delays. Manage contracts with subcontractors and suppliers, monitor performance and resolve contract‑related issues. Aid the planning team in producing project data and key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress, identify deviations and make data‑driven decisions for improvement. Provide leadership and mentorship to less experienced planners and personnel, fostering professional growth and competence. Skills Analytical and problem‑solving. Knowledge Proficient use of project management tools and software such as Excel, MS Project, Primavera P6 or ASTA. Extensive understanding of construction project management principles, methodologies and best practices. Expertise in project scheduling and planning, including complex project schedules using industry‑standard tools. Expertise in risk management in project programmes (e.g. TRA, QSRA, etc.). Understanding of financial aspects related to project planning, including budgeting, cost estimation, Earned Value Management and analysis. Experience Significant experience in successfully planning and managing a variety of construction projects, including large‑scale and complex projects. Substantial experience leading and managing planning resources for construction projects, with a track record of successful delivery. Previous experience managing relationships with clients, subcontractors and other stakeholders, demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
