Network Engineering Specialist

Role Overview The role is a senior designer within the IP Networks team responsible for designing networks supporting BT’s broadband services, specialist media and broadcast services, and BT’s Consumer TV services. The overall design authority covers CDN solutions across BT, EE and Plusnet broadband and mobile services, delivering strategic transformation using cloud technologies and agile methodologies. Responsibilities Deliver complex resolutions impacting customers. Identify opportunities to improve standards of practice. Provide technical expertise for significant components across domains. Ensure technical quality across matrix team structures. Autonomously design, test and deploy CDN solutions for BT TV and third‑party content. Act as a design authority within multiple squads, enabling faster delivery. Develop design patterns across CDN and related domains. Skills & Qualifications Systems thinking – evaluate impacts across structure, people, process and technology. Technology design – partner with business to architect software, systems and networks. Technology excellence – apply emerging technology to new digital solutions. Agile – champion collaborative approaches and continuous improvement. Proven ability to develop complex solution designs spanning multiple domains. Expertise across software development, IP networking, cloud/server infrastructure, broadband, mobile and TV distribution technologies. Experience with on‑premise and public cloud deployments. Commercial acumen – develop effective business cases and budget awareness. Strong communication – influence across the business. Knowledge of TCP/IP stack, RADIUS and SNMP. Software experience – Python, Ansible, Git, Podman/Docker, VMs, CICD pipelines. Networking fundamentals – BGP, VLANs, IP addressing. Presentation skills – external audience communication. Technology stack – Java, Python, UNIX Shell scripting, Maven, Docker, Git, Jenkins, Ansible, HashiCorp orchestration products, Grafana, Kafka, Redis, Atlassian suite, Kubernetes, OpenStack. Experience Coached team to improve role effectiveness. Aligned project plans with BT strategy and values. Made decisions in ambiguous situations using incomplete information. Spoke for integrity on issues. Moved outside expected process to suit customer needs. Actively participated in strategy setting sessions. Showcased expertise on projects or led work outside core expertise. Collaborated with recognised experts on new projects. Led design communities in complex carrier/service provider networks. Practiced agile ways – squad member, scrum master or product owner. Supported RFPs, vendor selection and business case development. Project management or solution architecture experience. Preferable: roadmap, architecture or budget setting experience.
