Heavy Equipment Operator – Swing Shift at Vaagen Brothers Lumber. Vaagen Bros. Lumber Inc. is a family‑owned wood products manufacturer that has operated in northeastern Washington for over 70 years. We strongly value continuous improvement and respect for people and are currently in a Lean transformation. We operate sawmills in Colville and Usk, WA, and employ over 175 people. Job Description Operate production machine centers and equipment safely, including front‑end loaders, backhoes, excavators, graders, dozers, etc. Perform mandatory visual inspections of equipment before use, checking for structural damage, oil leaks, and tire pressure. Relieve Crane Operators as needed (Colville only). Cross‑train on multiple machine centers, rolling stock, and other departments. Check all fluid levels before operating equipment. Clean equipment after each use and perform basic scheduled maintenance. Keep daily maintenance service records. Assist with keeping the area around the mill clean of debris and ensure roadways are clear. Float between departments to assist where needed. Operate equipment safely and efficiently. Mentor new employees. Apply Lock‑out Tag‑out procedures. Perform entry‑level sawmill duties such as stacking boards, general cleanup, waste removal, and tending machines. Maintain a clean and safe work area, and keep tools and supplies in their assigned locations. Maintain communication with team members and apply lean business practices. Submit maintenance requests and Idea Cards when necessary. Perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements 5+ years operating heavy equipment. Ability to identify tree species. Adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Dependable, reliable, with a good attendance record. Ability to streamline processes and reduce waste. Knowledge of lean techniques preferred. Minimum age 18 for sawmill work. HS diploma or GED. Physical capability to stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach safely; may lift >50 lbs on occasion. Background check subject; criminal record considered per RCW and WAC. Must pass drug test and pre‑employment physical exam. Position is safety‑sensitive; impairment poses substantial risk. Hours/Days/Schedule 40+ hours per week. Shift work and/or weekends. Full‑time. Salary / Wage / Benefits Pay: $20–$30 per hour. FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt.
