We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share.Job DescriptionLarge slaughterhouses and animal‑by‑products installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. We have established a process for the definition of BAT within the UK, based on a transparent, collaborative, data‑ and evidence‑led approach that safeguards and builds on the current high levels of environmental protection. Central to this process is the UK BAT Author.You’ll be responsible for drafting BAT conclusions, liaising with Technical Working Groups and presenting a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide, environmental standard for industry. Your role will include:Specialist knowledge and understanding of the slaughterhouse and animal‑by‑products industryGood understanding of process engineering and environmental issuesGood understanding of environmental legislation and policy in the UKCapability to critically analyse technical arguments and dataAbility to work with and write technical documentsGood project‑management skills and drive to completeWe use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, but some travel and overnight stays may be required.TeamYou’ll join the UK BAT Team, embedded within the Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate but reporting to DEFRA and the Standards Council. In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued.Experience and Skills RequiredYou will have at least 5 years of working experience and a solid understanding of environmental regulation in the industry.Expert understanding of the slaughterhouse and animal‑by‑products industryUK and EU industrial environmental legislation, in particular the IED and the Environmental Permitting RegulationsKey skills include:Collection and technical analysis of complex industrial dataUnderstanding the implications of BAT conclusions in permits, on industry and the environmentVerbal and written communicationBuilding and maintaining relationshipsPlanning, prioritising, and organising tasks and resources to ensure timely and effective resultsResponding flexibly to challenges and building consensusAbility to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and cultures, encouraging others to consider diversity issues in their workInterview ProcessApplications will be blind assessed using competency questions. Interviews will be held via MS Teams with 4 capability‑based questions and a presentation. A reserve list will be held for 6 months.Contract & BenefitsLength of contract: up to 2 years from appointment.
