Overview An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated registrar in Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, Virology, Public Health or Paediatrics (including paediatric infectious diseases) to join UKHSA as a clinical fellow. This fellowship offers nationwide experience in major incident investigation, outbreak surveillance, guidance and policy development, research, service improvement and collaboration across regional reference laboratories, directorates and divisions. Key Responsibilities Develop a personalised fellowship plan with supervisors, focusing on objectives, outputs and timescales for projects. Gain specialist training in national reference virology services, including WHO‑accredited measles and rubella laboratory, intrathecal antibody testing service and diagnostics for rare infections such as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Undertake a service evaluation project reviewing 10 years of intrathecal antibody testing data and a literature review to inform future strategy. Present findings to national stakeholders and contribute to publication. Engage in broader diagnostic work, including exposure to assay development processes not typically available in NHS virology training. Support national role delivery, programme commissioning, financing, policy development and quality improvement in infectious disease surveillance and public health. Identify, investigate and respond to communicable disease clusters and outbreaks. Collaborate cross‑divisional within UKHSA, liaise with stakeholders, and deliver clinical input into national planning and preparedness workstreams. Attend key meetings, cross‑UKHSA training, projects and complete placement evaluation. Pursue continuing professional development, maintaining awareness of service provision requirements and statutory obligations. Qualifications & Eligibility Currently in a training programme with a National Training Number (NTN) in Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, Virology or Public Health. Registeree must have OOPE/OOPT approval in principle from their Training Programme Director (TPD). Experience in a clinical field, including Public Health trainees on accredited programmes. Essential: MBBS or equivalent clinical qualification; specialist trainee status in infectious disease, microbiology, public health or paediatrics. Desirable: PhD or Masters, experience of collaborating with NHS England and other agencies, ability to present complex ideas to stakeholders. Proficiency in preparing written reports and published work. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, prioritising work timely. Security & Clearance Higher security clearance required for science sites at UKHSA. Applicants must obtain a Counter‑Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance for unescorted access to scientific sites. Employment Conditions 12‑month fellowship (Out of Programme Experience) commencing February/March 2026. Hybrid working based at UKHSA Scientific Campus in Colindale; minimum of 60% of contractual hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata).
