Job Overview University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer a 12‑month secondment as a speech and language therapist on a high‑intensity, specialised MDT Hyper‑Acute Rehabilitation pathway. The role is available on a full‑time or part‑time basis and supports patients with complex neurological and orthopaedic needs following major trauma or illness. Detailed Job Description & Main Responsibilities Provide advanced clinical skills and deliver high intensity, specialised hyper‑acute rehabilitation under the direction of a Rehabilitation Medicine consultant. Collaborate closely with a dedicated multidisciplinary team to support a moderate number of appropriate UHS patients. Work alongside the B8a Clinical Specialist AHP Lead and deputise in their absence. Attend a 5‑day service roster, including bank holidays, to support continuous patient care. Engage in regular supervision, in‑service teaching, and further training and development opportunities as part of UHS. Contribute to audit, research, personal and service development initiatives. Use NHS systems and communicate effectively – both verbally and written – with patients, carers, managers and other health‑care professionals. Essential Skills Professional qualification in speech and language therapy. HCPC registration. Advanced, postgraduate clinical skills and experience in acute neuro‑rehabilitation. Experience in day‑to‑day team management. Enhanced leadership skills to work alongside a multi‑professional team. Solid foundation in audit, research, personal and service development. Clear communication skills – verbal and written. Expressed desire and reasons for working in acute rehabilitation at UHS on your application. Desirable Skills Needed Evidence of providing teaching to your profession and students. Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and relevant specialist groups. Masters level qualification or equivalent experience. Evidence of commitment to relevant ongoing CPD and development in relevant areas. Evidence of relevant speech and language therapy knowledge and expertise with recent experience demonstrating this. Evidence of post‑graduate training in relevant speciality. Experience of supervising staff. Experience and involvement with training. Ability to communicate complex information fluently, confidently and effectively to a diverse range of people. Ability to demonstrate a practical and sensitive approach and flexibility in working style when applying clinical judgement to complex clinical issues. Ability to create rapport and professionally manage relationships with colleagues, patients and carers and the emotional challenges this presents.
