Interim Business Development Manager – Life Sciences Location: Hybrid (Birmingham, West Midlands-based) Team: Inward Investment Contract Type: Fixed-term, Maternity Cover Salary: Competitive, based on experience Shape the Future of Life Sciences in the West Midlands Join the West Midlands Growth Company as an Interim Business Development Manager – Life Sciences and help drive new investment, jobs, and sector growth across the region. You’ll play a central role in positioning the West Midlands as the destination of choice for innovative life sciences businesses looking to invest, expand, and thrive. Working as part of our Inward Investment team, you’ll develop and manage a strong pipeline of life sciences projects – from early-stage leads through to successful investment and expansion decisions. By building relationships with high-growth companies, universities, commercial partners, and government stakeholders, you’ll help convert the region’s world-class assets into tangible economic outcomes and high-quality jobs. What to Expect in This Role Manage a high-quality pipeline of life sciences investment and expansion projects from first contact to location decision and jobs delivered. Pick up and progress the existing portfolio from the current postholder, maintaining momentum and continuity of support for active investors. Turn regional strengths into sharp propositions that clearly explain why life sciences companies should choose the West Midlands. Work closely with senior colleagues to coordinate projects across sub-sectors, markets, and partner geographies. Drive targeted lead generation, including trade shows, missions, and sector events where there is clear potential for high-value investment. Lead account management for strategic life sciences investors, spotting and securing opportunities for growth and expansion. Collaborate with DBT and sector teams on key account plans, supporting further foreign direct investment into the region. Use CRM to log activity, track pipeline performance, and provide clear, timely reporting for partners and stakeholders. Are You the Right Fit? You’re a consultative business developer with a strong interest in life sciences and the economics of investment. You’re confident in complex, multi-stakeholder environments – from scaling companies and universities to public partners and government – and can turn sector insight into clear, evidence-based investment cases. Data-confident and highly organised, you manage multiple projects at pace while keeping quality, outcomes and deadlines on track. You bring strong relationship-building, negotiation and influencing skills, and want your work to grow the West Midlands’ life sciences ecosystem and wider economy.
