The post is available for recruitment as soon as possible and may be considered for full‑time or part‑time work. The role is based at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, and involves providing tertiary‑level oncology care within a teaching hospital’s cancer centre and peripheral clinics. The position also requires a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit. Main Duties Clinical: Provide oncology advice to the relevant MDT and patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers; prescribe and supervise chemotherapy; cover general oncological emergencies on call; manage outpatient clinic, day unit and ward activities. Administrative: Participate in clinical governance processes, including reporting into the Trust mortality database; engage with all administrative electronic systems required for patient care. Research: Contribute to an active research programme linked to the Sir Bobby Robson Unit, the research and development directorate and Newcastle University; encourage further research collaboration. Teaching: Develop teaching skills within the Trust; provide bedside and clinical teaching of undergraduate students; supervise clinical training of junior doctors, deanery trainees and AHCPs. Flexibility: May need to work a more flexible pattern (including evenings and weekends) to meet patient needs. Person Specification Essential Primary medical qualification. Full GMC registration. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within 6 months of the Appointments Committee date. Evidence of experience in the specialty and a substantial commitment to it. Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion and take independent responsibility for patients referred to the tertiary centre. Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty. Evidence of authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines and understanding of clinical governance. Experience of supervising junior medical staff and participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Evidence of involvement in research methodology and publication of findings. Participation in audit and evidence of driving practice change. Alignment with the Trust’s values and a flexible, committed approach to service delivery and professional development. Commitment to CPD. Willingness to work the on‑call rota and a flexible pattern of working, including evenings and weekends. Desirable Higher degree. Special skills training in the specialty. Proven management and administrative experience with understanding of managerial goals. Evidence of leadership, project management and implementation of change. Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills or a postgraduate qualification in medical education. Higher degree in research. Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit and revisiting audit to assess improvement.
