Overview The post holder will provide clinical leadership, facilitate professional development and carry overall responsibility for the management and coordination of the co‑located Midwifery‑Led Birthing Unit, while acting as backup to the other Intrapartum lead midwife for the Consultant led Labour Suite. The role supports women‑centred care, promotes physiological birth, and ensures high standards in line with Trust policies. Responsibilities Support midwives and women throughout spontaneous labour. Provide leadership and clinical oversight of the Midwifery‑Led Birthing Unit. Coordinate staff recruitment, retention, appraisal and performance management. Act as a midwifery specialist adviser in formal and informal settings. Lead or contribute to research, audit, risk and complaint management. Facilitate staff training, development and succession planning. Manage resource allocation and contribute to change management initiatives. Person Specification Education and Qualifications Essential: NMC Registered Midwife Evidence of recent provision of evidence‑based care Personal/professional development at degree level or soon to complete Mentorship qualification Desirable: NIPE Leadership course Evidence of continual professional development Experience and Knowledge Essential: Post‑registration experience at band 6 in all relevant areas following the Midwives Rules and Code. Experience of staff recruitment, retention, appraisal, sickness and performance management. Experience of coordinating a labour suite or birthing unit. Knowledge of change management, risk management, complaint management and national maternity recommendations. Evidence of data collection and analysis and of facilitating professional development. Visible expertise in physiological birth and forward‑thinking, evidence‑based midwifery care. Desirable: Evidence of initiating and implementing change processes. Evidence of resource and people management. Previous people‑management experience. Clinical area management responsibility. Skills and Abilities Essential: Strong priority setting and delegation skills. Excellent time‑management. Ability to change practice using evidence‑based research. Demonstrated clinical leadership. Assessment, teaching and training competence. Highly effective communication and personal skills. Ability to use own initiative and act autonomously. Effective role modelling and team working. Comprehensive documentation and patient‑centred care commitment. Proactive in succession planning. Desirable: Team building, interview and appraisal, project management, line management and presentation skills. Budgetary awareness and experience.
