Assistant Underwriter

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced insurance professional to join our Marine & Energy team in London on a 6 month FTC basis. The Specie team writes a diverse portfolio on a worldwide basis with particular focus on North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Products can be tailored to meet requirements of clients, from smaller local / domestic companies to global operations. Markel is a recognised leader of Specie business with a successful history in the class. The underwriting team is supported by our experienced, in-house claims team. This role is based in the Marine Division with special focus on supporting and developing its role within one Wholesale. The Marine and Energy Division is part of a Wholesale group offering services for various specialty lines such as Equine and Livestock, Marine and Energy Liability, Trade Credit, Political Risk, and Surety (TCPRS). Our underwriting teams are known for their expertise in underwriting complex risks and delivering exceptional service. Business Unit overview: The Energy team focuses on underwriting a wide range of energy risks, including upstream, midstream & downstream energy, Power & Sustainable Energy and Marine liabilities, whilst the Marine short tail team specialises in cargo, specie, hull and war lines. Our team of experienced underwriters is dedicated to providing comprehensive coverage and exceptional service to our clients. The division is led by industry experts who are committed to driving sustainable, profitable growth and strengthening relationships with key stakeholders. What you’ll be doing: Receive new business & renewal submissions from brokers and underwriters which need to be processed through Markel’s 1WF process Support Underwriters in the renewing of policies, this may include claims analysis, as well as producing pre-bind CAT reports, and pre-bind pricing work Develop an understanding of the Specie product On occasion, specific reports or management information may be required by Underwriters or Managers, be prepared to produce such information upon request Develop positive relationships across the Marine team, and wider teams such as UST, Xceedance, Compliance, CAT team, and Claims Champion continuous improvements and continually work with the team to improve end to end process, data and data warehouse Broker and client meetings as required Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit Markel’s exposure Key Skills: Strong analytical skills Positive mindset Collaborative team player within the Specie team, and further afield across Markel Demonstrate being an active member of a team and contribute in an open environment with excellent communication and interpersonal skills Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and PowerBI portfolio analysis tools Enthusiastic about learning new skills What’s in it for you: A great starting salary plus annual bonus & strong benefits package… Up to 16% company pension scheme, Private medical and dental cover, Menopause plan, emergency care benefit (children/Pets/dependants) Income protection, Life assurance, electric car scheme, travel insurance 25 days paid holiday plus Bank Holidays, with the opportunity to buy/sell extra leave As well as other great benefits on offer there are countless opportunities to learn new skills and develop in your career Are you ready to play your part?
