As a Software Engineer in the Debit Cards and Payments lab, you’ll look for opportunities to progressively modernise our existing platforms and services, adopting agile ways of working to deliver iterative value at pace. We’re responsible for servicing over 30 million debit cards across all LBG brands, and work alongside global industry leaders, including Visa and MasterCard, using data, technology and systems thinking to drive great outcomes and experiences for our customers. What you’ll do Work as part of a self‑organised engineering team to design and develop software features or services that are delightful and vital in our mission to help Britain prosper. Collaborate with teams to modernise and integrate mainframe‑based systems, ensuring seamless interoperability with new technologies and platforms. Be at the heart of delivery in your team, building features with a passion for evolving best practices within your community. Work with the product and engineering leads to achieve the vision and customer outcomes for your Lab, through writing well‑factored and tested code. Be curious about technology and understanding how things work. You’ll influence positively, demonstrating the right values and behaviours as we improve how we deliver. You’ll love to solve customer problems using technology and engineering practices. You’ll lead, direct and shape approaches to solving technical challenges and translating business requirements into technical solutions. Including you What you’ll need Strong experience working with mainframe technologies (e.g., COBOL, PL/I, CDC JCL, CICS, DB2) and integrating mainframe systems with modern platforms. Ability to troubleshoot and optimise mainframe applications for performance and reliability. Familiarity with mainframe modernisation strategies and tools. Good experience of software‑delivery in a fast‑paced, highly regulated environment, understanding the software development lifecycle end‑to‑end. It would be great if you also had Good knowledge/hands‑on experience using modern technologies such as SQL Databases, Kafka, public cloud platforms and ISO20022 messaging. Experience with DevOps practices, including continuous integration & continuous deployment (CI/CD). Diverse technical experience and a proven ability to deliver high‑quality applications at scale. Agile experience and excellent problem‑solving skills. You’re able to effectively communicate and work together across engineering to maximise inner‑sourcing opportunities and reduce waste.
