Medical Secretary – Emergency Department Closing date: 15 December 2025 This post is open to employees of the five LAASP organisations: The Clatterbridge Centre, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Liverpool University Hospitals, Liverpool Women's Hospital, and The Walton Centre. Applicants will be required to confirm current employment with one of these organisations. The purpose of this post is to provide a comprehensive secretarial service to the consultants and the wider team of the Emergency Department. The successful candidate will be expected to work with minimum supervision, use their own initiative, and carry out the duties in a way that makes a direct and positive contribution to the organisation. NHS experience is not essential as full training will be given, but office/typing experience is expected. Main duties of the job Provide a comprehensive secretarial service to consultants and speciality teams, including transcribing (audio typing) letters on behalf of the clinical team and arranging appropriate follow‑up arrangements. Manage the creation, reduction, and cancellation of clinic templates on behalf of clinicians. Liaise with all service users (patients, GPs, other Trusts) via telephone and email, relaying messages to clinicians and responding to queries in a timely manner. Manage and maintain 18‑week pathways, including tertiary referrals to external trusts, ensuring accurate recording on the PAS system and that referrals are followed up promptly in conjunction with the Referral to Treat (RTT) patient pathway. Other general administration duties relevant to the role as listed in the job description. Qualifications Educated to GCSE/O Level standard/equivalent or higher RSA/OCR Typing/Word processing Level 3 or equivalent Secretarial Qualification or equivalent experience ECDL or equivalent Shorthand Experience Excellent I.T. skills with knowledge and experience of all Microsoft office packages Experience working in an NHS office environment as a medical secretarial Knowledge of medical terminology Current employee of a LAASP organisation Attributes Capability to adapt to most situations Eager to learn Ability to maintain control of stressful/sensitive situations Skills Ability to communicate professionally at all levels in a helpful courteous manner.
