Lead Clinical Sonographer

Job Summary The post holder will be responsible for the management and development of the maternity and gynaecology ultrasound services, ensuring optimum use of staffing and equipment resources to achieve the local and national screening agenda. They will be a key member of the senior maternity team, reporting directly to the Head of Midwifery and managing the day‑to‑day delivery of the maternity and gynaecology ultrasound service across the Trust. The role is split 50% clinical, 50% management. The post holder will line‑manage clinical sonographers and student sonographers. Manage and develop the maternity and gynaecology ultrasound services. Provide clinical leadership and manage the day‑to‑day delivery of the service. Act as line manager for clinical sonographers and student sonographers. Main Duties of the Job Act as an expert practitioner demonstrating and disseminating advanced practice and knowledge in ultrasound examinations. Provide and lead on an expert ultrasound service in line with nationally and locally recommended guidance and protocols. Provide specialist and expert advice to other sonographers and health professionals regarding ultrasound examinations. Maintain and develop links with clinical leads and experts to ensure that standards and scope of training provide staff with appropriate levels of knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the service. Lead on and develop a regular programme of audit open to a multi‑disciplinary team ensuring inclusivity of all aspects of clinical practice within the department related to ultrasound. Contribute to the development of the obstetric ultrasound department providing leadership within its strategic work plan. Provide expert clinical and professional leadership and supervision to the trust. Act as the Screening Support Sonographer and follow NHSFASPrequirements as specified in the NHSFASPhandbook and byDQASS. Link with networks across the wider health community at both national and local levels to develop and plan strategies for service. Assist in the evaluation and selection of ultrasound equipment as required. Support the investigation of complaints/PALS enquiries, clinical/non‑clinical incidents and near misses, ensuring issues are addressed and used to improve service. Investigate incidents in line with Patient Incident Response Framework and provide reports to the clinical governance review group. Ensure key performance indicator data for the FASP is produced for quarterly submission to NHS England. Maintain infection control and clinical governance protocols, records, and corrective actions. Set the standard for and coordinate quality assurance processes. Be responsible for equipment testing, quality audit and reject analysis, documenting and reporting findings. Monitor, report and act on equipment faults, and maintain a service continuity plan. Take a role in the technical and patient‑focused aspects of the department’s audit programme. Support the department and organisation by carrying out any other duties that reasonably fit within the broad scope of this grade and type of work. Person Specification Educational Qualification & Training – Essential MSc in Ultrasound or working towards (or equivalent) BSc Diagnostic Radiography (or equivalent) or BSc in Midwifery/Nursing (or equivalent) PG Diploma or Certificate in Medical Ultrasound Current membership to professional bodies HCPC, BMUS, NMC, and SOR (or equivalent) Desirable Management qualification or experience Experience – Essential Experience in obstetrics and gynaecology Experience of day‑to‑day running of a discrete service Management & Leadership experience Desirable Experience of writing for publication Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service is required to check for any previous criminal convictions.
