About the team This role is part of the HQ Operations team, who are responsible for developing and maintaining the competence requirements of our operational staff against a robust suite of operational procedures. The team's aim is to strive for continual improvement through development of people and processes. About the job The primary function of this role is to undertake and lead operational incident investigations for GWR and/or involving third parties, such as Network Rail and other TOCs. Your main responsibilities will be: Identifying incidents and/or accidents on the GWR network that require investigation. Acting as a Lead Investigator, undertaking and managing operational incident investigations on behalf of the HQ Operations team. Acting as Designated Competent Person for ACMS investigations. Managing recommendations and action tracking. Providing effective interaction with external bodies concerned with operational safety, including, ORR, RSSB, RAIB and Network Rail. Providing expert guidance, subject matter expertise and support, to all operational managers on investigations and ensure consistent application and implement effective recommendations. Training new investigators by delivering the internal GWR operational investigations course. You’ll need to be: A strong team player with excellent interpersonal and communications skills to engage with colleagues at all levels within the business. Independent and able to work alone but with a view to furthering the activities of the wider team. Prepared to work to tight deadlines and have a determination to succeed. Must be self‑motivated, committed to delivering quality results with minimum supervision and able to use your initiative appropriately. Have the ability to work methodically and create/maintain accurate records is also essential. As a minimum, you will need to have: An investigation competency, and experience of undertaking and producing operational incident investigations. An analytical and curious mindset. Experience working with the ACMS competence management system. The ability to work under pressure and cope with competing and changing demands. Relevant competencies including verification and training desirable but training in some or all of these elements can be provided. About the location The role is predominantly office based in Milford House HQ, Swindon, but flexibility is required to travel across the GWR network, including ad‑hoc lodgings where necessary. Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week Additional Information: There is a second line operations on‑call requirement which will include weekend working. There will be the opportunity for some remote working, but this is variable and dependent on business requirements – every week in HQ Operations is different Contacting the recruiting manager in advance of application is highly recommended.
