Job Summary Accountable to ED Matrons/Deputy Service General Manager / Head of Nursing. The post holder will play a key role in supporting the nurse managers in providing high quality care and will act as a Named Nurse within a team. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care, providing mentorship for students and junior nurses, and ensuring compliance with policies and evidence-based practice. Previous applicants need not apply. 9 months post‑registration NHS experience is required. Newly qualified nurses will not be recruited for this role. Key Result Areas & Performance Act as a Named Nurse within a Team, taking responsibility for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care from admission to discharge. Keep abreast of current advances in clinical care and facilitate implementation of evidence‑based practice. Participate in the development and use of protocols and standards for nursing care. Engage in evaluation, audit and research of nursing care, incorporating findings into practice. Promote health and prevent ill health among staff, patients and their relatives. Maintain a safe and pleasant environment for patients, visitors and colleagues. Ensure emergency/special equipment is ready and in good working order. Record patient/nursing data accurately on the computer. Ensure compliance with NMC Guidelines for Records and Record Keeping. Take responsibility for administration, care and custody of medicines in line with legal requirements and Trust guidelines. Attend mandatory annual updates in fire training, basic life support and maintain knowledge of relevant policies. Understand and apply relevant Trust policies, including the Major Incident Plan. Adhere to national legislation such as Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH and Moving and Handling Regulations. Transport people and items safely and timely, in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures. Ensure biomedical investigations and interventions are undertaken safely, reporting and documenting results appropriately. Work Force Manage a group of patients, prioritising their needs in conjunction with ward/department priorities. Manage the ward in the absence of senior staff, ensuring safe and effective patient care. Manage an area of responsibility as required within allocated resources. Financial Understand ward/department budgets and contribute to cost‑effective service delivery while maintaining care standards. Participate in the management of skill mix issues, stock control and resource allocation. Partnerships Develop and maintain effective communication with the interprofessional team, patients and relatives, particularly in difficult situations. General Participate in the orientation of new staff members and attend meetings related to service improvement. Act as a change agent where necessary. Ensure all Trust Nursing policies and procedures are followed. Be aware of operational personnel issues such as absence, sickness, disciplinary and recruitment matters. Investigate the nursing aspect of complaints and clinical incidents, initiating corrective actions. Maintain continuous professional development and create a Personal Development Plan. Contribute to the clinical and educational development of other staff. Serve as a supervisor/mentor for learners and preceptor for newly qualified nurses. Act as a clinical role model for all staff. Encourage staff to stay updated on new developments and share information, ideas and experiences. Person Specification Essential First‑level NMC registration. 9 months post‑registration experience. Excellent verbal and written interpersonal skills. Able to formulate and verbalise views, anticipate and forward plan. Able to work under pressure and remain calm. Able to recognise stress in self and colleagues and support through stressful situations. Patient focus and reflective practice. Up‑to‑date knowledge within the ED. Flexibility to work all shifts including rotational nights. Desirable Computer literacy.
