**Summary**:
At HSE, we work with one goal in mind - to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy.
We believe everyone has the right to come home safe and well from their job. That’s why our mission is to prevent work-related death, injury and ill health.
Great Britain’s health and safety record is the envy of much of the world. Central to this is our work to protect people by managing risk in a proportionate and effective way, supporting innovation and increasing productivity.
We are proud of the support we provide to businesses - through free guidance and advice. By giving employers the confidence to manage risks correctly, we boost productivity, support the economy and contribute to a fairer society.
HSE leads the way, but doesn’t act alone. Working in partnership is one of our strengths. It’s at the heart of how we protect workers and the public. We are firm and fair when using our legal powers. Inspection helps us check that serious risks are managed sensibly. When things go wrong, investigation helps us get to the truth and learn lessons. We hold employers to account for their failures and get answers for victims and make workplaces safer.
Please note the post can be based at any of the advertised HSE locations however, as this is a national role and HSE regulates sites across the whole of Great Britain, you will be expected to regularly spend short periods working away from home which will include overnight stays. For a list of HSE offices please see HSE locations
**Job description**:
Our Radiation Specialists help to ensure employers in Great Britain work safely with radiation across a range of sectors (e.g. industrial, medical, oil and gas). In this role, you can utilise your considerable scientific technical knowledge and practical experience to influence not only individual employers but whole industries and sectors.
Working as part of a unique national specialist team, you will carry out your own inspections and investigations, taking enforcement where necessary, including the serving of notices and completion of prosecution reports. You will also provide specialist support to other parts of HSE.
We are looking for experienced specialists who can, under challenge, think strategically, identify underlying core issues, and engage at different levels both with colleagues, site technical staff and at the most senior levels within an organisation. You will be decisive and able to influence those organisations to bring about improvements.
Given that HSE regulates sites across the whole of GB you will be expected to spend short periods working away from home which will include overnight stays and regular travel.
**Training and development**
From day one, you will be supported by your manager and colleagues to understand your role in HSE, develop your skills and support you in your continuing professional development.
For the legal requirements of the role, you will be enrolled on the Specialist Training Programme (STP) and will be required to study for and successfully complete the Unit. You will receive appropriate training and complete a legal assessment.
**Responsibilities**:
- Carrying out inspection work with ionising and non-ionising radiation. Concentrating in particular on practices requiring consent.
- Carrying out investigations following radiation incidents and reported concerns, comparing conditions with minimum legal requirements and good practice to identify underlying causes and support legal action to avoid further risk.
- Identifying reasonably practicable control measures and address underlying management failings, using enforcement action where appropriate.
- Providing specialist opinion and expert evidence in reports for legal proceedings and expert witness statements, and when required, presenting these to courts and tribunals.
- Continuing to bring about Health and Safety improvements to national and international standards for radiation protection.
- Secure intelligence, share information and advice towards policy, research, and guidance to benefit other Government departments, the public, industry, professional bodies and trade associations.
- Given that HSE regulates sites across the whole of GB you will be expected to travel and spend short periods working away from home which will include overnight stays.
