Research Associate/ Fellow

**Job Purpose**
**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal/Co Investigator:
1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.
2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
3. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, including contributing to publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
4. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
5. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research
6. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues and participate in team/ group/ meetings/ seminars/ workshops across the research Group/School/College/University and wider community.
7. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
8. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.
9. Make a contribution to the associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
10. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
13. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.
These key tasks are not exhaustive but simply highlight a number of major tasks the staff member may be reasonably expected to perform.
Appointments at level 8 will demonstrate enhanced leadership, academic responsibility and strategic management, particularly through:
14. Develop, lead and sustain research of international standard in deep neural networks and machine learning applicable to conversational agents and/or language understanding tasks OR make a leading contribution to one of the other project themes as they evolve.
15. Make a significant contribution to the management and direction of the project.

**Knowledge, Skills and Experience**

C1 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of text understanding (NLP), search (information retrieval), machine learning, or dialogue systems.
C2 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions in using machine learning (e.g. neural models) in information retrieval, NLP tasks and/or conversational systems
C3 Strong programming skills and experience developing and deploying machine learning techniques

**Essential**:
C4 A reputation in and insight into, a relevant internationally competitive research area.
C6 Strong collaborative/project management ability, ideally including evidence of working with external partners (industrial or academic).

E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career developer / researcher
E2 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences, commensurate to SIGIR, ACL, SIGDIAL, NeurIPS, ICML, IJCAI or similar, with an emerging national or international reputation
E3 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
E4 Experience in undertaking empirical research in natural language processing, information retrieval, or conversational/dialogue systems
E5 Experience in undertaking independent empirical research
E6 Experience developing new models and techniques using modern deep learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch
**Desirable**
F1 Knowledge of specialist appropriate techniques, including user simulation and user modelling, reinforcement learning, entity and knowledge-based representations
Experience deploying research software in commercial environments using cloud infrastructure
F2 Experience with learning from user interaction and behavior data, including sim
