Are you a dynamic and driven Project Manager seeking an interesting new opportunity?
These are changing times in the way in which National Highways develops its Major Projects to make sure that they address the problems of today but are compatible with the world of tomorrow. As the Major Projects directorate grows, National Highways arelooking to increase the Project Management talent throughout the four programmes within, and this position is your opportunity to shape precisely how those projects are developed.
We currently have an exciting opportunity with the Regional Investment Programme (RIP) working in the South East Region based in Guildford.
RIP is one of four programmes within the National Highways Major Projects Directorate. Major Projects is responsible for the delivery of nearly 70 projects with a total value of more than £14 billion, and some of the most exciting and challenging projectsin the country. National Highway’s goal is to change the industry: to make roads and their construction and maintenance safer; to be more responsive to the needs of our customers, particularly about biodiversity and carbon; and to exploit the digital agendaand drive the productivity agenda to improve delivery.
This is a varied role and one which would involve you leading several interesting discreet projects aimed at improving local communities including the planning, management, liaison with communities and delivery, alternatively, you could be working as partof a wider project management team supporting a Senior Project Manager on one of our much larger projects.
Project activities include monitoring the performance of multiple external contractors and consultants, ensuring adherence to effective governance, quality assurance, health and safety, technical and specialist standards across the supply chain and NationalHighways ensuring successful delivery of agreed project outcomes and acting in line with mandatory and delegated responsibilities.
Following the successful delivery of a programme, you may transition onto other transformation programmes or capital project delivery.
What you’ll be leading on
Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with the Programme Manager, Senior Project Manager, Project Board and other key internal and external stakeholders, to ensure full mutual understanding of the project’s strategic and delivery objectives,to report on and review project performance, and to agree on solutions that resolve complex issues.
Clarify roles and responsibilities within the project delivery team, creating high-quality baseline management products, producing timely and accurate reports, and creating and maintaining specified records.
Design, agree and implement project plans, to ensure that all activities are appropriately organised to deliver project objectives, and are appropriately resourced to deliver the required outcomes.
Ensure the feasibility, design, and assessment work for proposed projects is produced effectively by our supply chain to inform the development of business cases and investment proposals.
Contribute to the development of robust business cases, clarify business benefits, quantify resource requirements and identify project interdependencies.
Identify and evaluate emerging risks, issues, dependencies, and constraints associated with the project, escalating where appropriate. Where necessary develop, agree, and implement solutions to overcome these.
Commission and manage the performance of delivery partners and expert consultancy support as appropriate, ensuring that project objectives and requirements are clearly understood, setting clear expectations for health and safety management, time, and cost;and taking appropriate remedial action where necessary.
Work closely with various internal and external stakeholders.
To be successful you’ll need
Experience in managing teams to successfully development of complex, medium/high-risk projects or high-profile projects.
Experience in managing complex relationships with multiple stakeholders and evidence of skills to influence relationships for positive outcomes.
Experience in managing business and/or value management cases for new projects through company-defined governance, review, and approval gates.
Experience managing and maintaining agreed-on project plans and detailed stage plans in conjunction with delivery partners.
Commercial skills with proven ability to negotiate and manage contracts to deliver outcomes and drive value for money.
Demonstrate experience as a mentor and/or coach to develop project management talent, skills, and competence within a complex project environment.
