Community Centre Duty Officer

The District Community Centre is a new community centre in Harwell near Didcot providing a venue to offer a range of activities and events as required by the new community at Great Western Park. The team operating this centre also run two satellite community centres on Great Western Park, the Northern and Southern Community centres.
We are looking for an excellent duty officer who, with the other duty officers will oversee the day to day running of the centres on Great Western Park, and who may occasionally be asked to help out at our other art and community centres.
**Community Centre Duty Officer Responsibilities**:
- Responsibility for the security of the centres, carrying out building and security checks and the opening and locking up of them (dependant on shift pattern).
- Responsibility for the health and safety of customers and complying with statutory legislation and council procedures, including the completion of risk assessments and the maintenance of first aid boxes.
- Completing general maintenance tasks such as decorative maintenance and minor repairs to equipment and fittings.
- As a key holder be available for emergency call outs as required.
- Ensuring the public spaces are clean, tidy and safe at all times, and the external areas are kept clear of leaves and rubbish.
- Overseeing contractors working on site and reporting on the progress of work, or any issues arising, to the centre manager.
- Supervising community centre support officers and additional casual staff, and where necessary supporting their training in the operating procedures of the facility.
- Liaising with hirers to ensure they have everything they require to run a high quality activity.
- Cover reception duties and use electronic booking system taking bookings and payments, including money handling.
- Overseeing the operation of the catering facilities.
- Setting up and clearing away of furniture and equipment in accordance with the hirers requirements, including technical lighting and sound equipment and ensuring all equipment is fit for purpose and functional.
- Effectively and imaginatively promoting the centres and its activities to ensure maximum use by all sectors of the community.
- Promoting the centres effectively and ensuring both website and social media are accurate and up to date.
- Ensuring the customer database is maintained and updated in accordance with The Data Protection Act 2018.
**Community Centre Duty Officer Requirements**:
Your essential skills, knowledge and experience
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences, such as members of the public and internal colleagues
- Good IT skills including Microsoft word, excel, power point, use of internet and use of electronic booking systems.
- Ability to set up and operate laptops and projectors
- Ability and willingness to use your initiative to work effectively as an individual and as part of a busy and committed team
- Experience of serving customers in a bar or catering environment, or equivalent money handling experience
- Ability to lift and carry equipment
- Understanding of health and safety procedures and risk assessments
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload
- Experience of managing and coordinating events and activities
- Ability to carry out minor maintenance tasks
Your essential qualifications
- GCSEs including in Maths and English at grade C or above
- Full driving licence and access to a car insured for business use or ability to attend building at short notice, out of hours
- First aid (if not an existing first aider this qualification must be achieved within 6 months of appointment)
If you have the following experience or qualifications - it’s a bonus
- Understanding of food hygiene regulations
- Understanding of theatre lighting and sound equipment
- Experience of marketing and promotions
- Knowledge and understanding of working in a local government setting
