Senior UX Designer – Customer

We're looking for a passionate, curious and driven Senior UX Designer to join our multidisciplinary team. As a UX designer at the UK's largest supermarket, you'll be crafting experiences that help millions of people shop better. You'll discover new opportunities, crafting intuitive and effortless solutions that improve every stage of a customer's shopping journey. You'll weigh business goals with user expectations, creating design solutions that exceed both. And you'll know how to experiment quickly, get back up, and try again.

Audiences don't get bigger or more diverse than this. So, you'll really need to know your onions. That includes a big appetite for human-centred design, customer research and data and analytics. Collaboration mixed with expertise and insight is the recipe for successful design. So, you'll be working with some of the finest UX and UI designers, researchers, UX writers, service designers, data and analytics experts, product managers and developers.

Our secret ingredient is our digital design system. So, you'll need experience using one, whether it's just a pinch to improve a prototype or a big dollop to shape a whole user journey.

About the role

As a Senior UX Designer at Tesco, you will:

  1. Design large and small projects from start to finish, redefining complicated experiences into simple and intuitive solutions.
  2. Own all end-to-end UX process activities including discovery, running design sprints, sketching, wire-framing, low-fidelity prototyping, and service/customer mapping.
  3. Champion human-centred design inside and outside of your team.
  4. Work within and across agile squads to design, develop and improve the customer experience across our digital products.
  5. Partner with UX researchers to help your team develop empathy for our customers, including those with a disability, and advocate for their needs, validating designs via A/B testing, unmoderated usability testing and more.
  6. Use quantitative data and partner with the analytics team to help advise your work.
  7. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, finding new opportunities for improvements.
  8. Collaborate with professionals from various fields including UI designers, researchers, engineers, UX writers, service designers, product managers, data analysts, and business collaborators to explore, build and deliver designs.
  9. Facilitate partner (business and user) workshops, run appropriate conceptualisation and participatory design sessions.
  10. Promote inclusive design practices and deliver accessible designs.
  11. Deliver valuable, high-quality and consistent work without sacrificing speed by using our Digital Design System and its standardised foundations, components, and patterns.
  12. Collaborate with the Design System team to help evolve the Design System based on user needs.
  13. Help other fields understand the value design can bring to a project to build outstanding products.
  14. Provide feedback to other designers to help strengthen your team and Tesco as a whole.
  15. Help your teammates build experience, strong decision-making skills, and empathy for our customers.
  16. Embrace opportunities to line manage other designers and help with their learning and development.
  17. Work with the Design Manager to cultivate a positive, supportive, and inclusive team culture.

About you

To get this role, you will need:

  1. A strong, well-curated portfolio demonstrating your expertise across web, responsive and native apps.
  2. Strong experience in high-profile design projects in a customer-facing commercial environment.
  3. Passion for solving product problems while balancing all facets of a user experience, including strategy and research, information architecture, interaction design and accessibility.
  4. A good understanding of the end-to-end iterative design process including how to develop and use design research, journey mapping, wire-framing, prototyping, and user testing to achieve human-centred design solutions.
  5. Proficiency in interaction design for web (desktop and mobile) and native applications.
  6. Experience of designing with accessibility in mind and meeting WCAG 2.1 level AA.
  7. Experience collaborating closely with multiple fields including product and engineering.
  8. Self-motivation, and good organisational and time-management skills.
  9. Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to present skills to all levels of seniority and subject area experts within the organisation.
  10. The ability to coach, mentor and set standards for ways of working for more junior team members.
  11. Proficiency with current industry design and collaboration tools, such as Figma and
