An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time nurse to join the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) nursing team within a Gastroenterology Specialist Nursing role.

Following training and supervision from the Senior IBD Specialist Nurse, you will work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) in both outpatient and inpatient settings to provide evidence-based care and support for newly diagnosed and existing IBD patients.

Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis are relapsing and remitting lifelong chronic conditions where patients often require prompt support and escalation of treatment to avoid hospital admission and/or complications of their disease. The IBD Specialist Nurse plays a pivotal role in supporting patients with the physical, social and emotional impact of these conditions.

Main duties of the job

The role of the IBD nurse includes:

  1. Telephone reviews, managing an advice line, nurse-led clinics.
  2. Attending and contributing to MDT meetings.
  3. Medication monitoring.
  4. Liaising with primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare professionals.
  5. Supporting patients, relatives, and other HCPs in the area of IBD.

The majority of the working day involves telephone review and advice to patients. Therefore, excellent communication and record-keeping skills are essential for this position, along with significant experience as a registered Nurse within a gastroenterology-related position, and with knowledge and a genuine interest in IBD.

Job responsibilities
  1. Support and contribute to the delivery and development of the IBD nursing service.
  2. Deputise in the absence of the Senior IBD Specialist Nurse.
  3. Act as a resource for education and clinical expertise related to IBD.
  4. Provide quality, evidence-based healthcare and information for both newly diagnosed and existing IBD patients.
  5. Liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  6. Manage safe and effective communication with patients through phone calls and emails.
  7. Run IBD follow-up clinics.
  8. Safely monitor patients on Thiopurines and Biologic medications.
  9. Apply for funding for high-cost drugs.
  10. Ensure accurate records and inform GPs when medication changes occur.
  11. Offer support to the wards for inpatients needing advice.
  12. Follow up patients from endoscopy.
  13. Offer education on IBD to other departments.
  14. Contribute to clinical governance within the Trust.
  15. Ensure timely review of patients with deteriorating symptoms.
Person SpecificationQualifications and Further Training
  1. First Level Registered Nurse.
  2. First level degree in related subject or equivalent training.
  3. Experience of Teaching and assessing.
  4. Evidence of knowledge in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
  5. Teaching and assessing qualification.
