North Devon Coast National Landscape Manager
3 weeks ago
Location: Barnstaple. Hybrid working and travel across the National Landscape and Devon.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to oversee the delivery of the North Devon Coast National Landscape Partnership's responsibilities to conserve and enhance one of England's finest landscapes at a time of great change.
The Role
The manager coordinates the National Landscape Partnership and Executive, contributes to national and regional joint working, develops projects and external fundings bids, and oversees the financial and operational delivery of the National Landscape service and its core team, hosted by Devon County Council's Environment Group. You will implement the statutory Management Plan (currently being reviewed) through engagement and collaboration with a wide range of agencies, organisations, land managers and local communities, including seizing opportunities to cooperate with Devon's other four National Landscapes, two National Parks, two World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserve.
About You
Do you have a track record of working in the landscape, planning, land management, nature conservation or heritage sectors? Do you have experience of partnership working, networking, relationship building, budget management and staff supervision? We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and confident person to lead and drive this small, multi-disciplinary team during a period of change. You will need a detailed knowledge of protected landscapes, relevant legislation and policy, and of broader environmental issues related to landscape, cultural heritage, land management, planning, nature and/or climate change. This is to provide advice and guidance to the Partnership and staff team. Strong interpersonal, diplomacy and communication skills are essential to realise the National Landscape's ability to convene, to catalyse, to facilitate, to influence and to deliver.
The North Devon Coast National Landscape
This is one of 34 National Landscapes designated in England that together with National Parks form the protected landscapes network that covers around 26% of England. Protected Landscapes are increasingly involved in delivering on national priorities and targets to enhance landscape, recover nature, build climate resilience and improve public access to the coast and countryside.
Devon County Council's Environment Group covers a range of environmental disciplines, including ecology, landscape, woodland creation, flood and coastal risk management, historic environment, and climate and hosts the Blackdown Hills National Landscape and the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The post is mainly office based with some home working and the post-holder should be able to make site visits across the whole North Devon coastline, travel to meetings within Devon and occasionally attend events outside of normal office hours.
Please note that the Chair and Vice-Chair of the North Devon Coast National Landscape Partnership will be involved in the recruitment process and for this purpose applicants' personal data will be shared securely by Devon County Council.
Date for interviews: 7th May 2025
