Clinician in Small Animal Medicine/Critical Care

Job Purpose
To deliver an efficient and effective critical care and internal medicine service by providing expertise and clinical activity in the Small Animal Hospital. To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, clinical scholars and to undertake clinical research/scholarship within the neurology service thereby contributing to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research. Main Duties and Responsibilities Clinical: 1. To provide a high-quality critical care and internal medicine service, and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners that will consequently maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and research activities.2. To support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.3. To contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.4. To support the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of the clinical scholars, by supervision of clinical duties and research projects, with a view to their successful completion of appropriate Board examinations.5. To participate in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to critical care and internal medicine service at national and international level as appropriate.6. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the speciality and the RCVS.7. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital. Teaching: 8. To engage in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders.9. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.10. To engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, (using a variety of methods and techniques) and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning. Clinical Research/Scholarship: 11. To collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine of an external reputation and develop a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed clinical journals and/or textbooks.12. To attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences within the service area. Administration: 13. To develop material to promote critical care and internal medicine service both at conferences and electronically.14. To undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division. To contribute to the performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with university strategy. Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential: A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS. For appointment at Grade 8: A2 Veterinary Diploma in critical care or internal medicine. Note: Candidates having completed a recognised residency training programme and Board-eligible would be appointed at Grade 7 and will be promoted to Grade 8 immediately upon passing the Board exams. Candidates with suitable relevant experience will be considered for appointment at Grade 7. Desirable: For appointment at Grade 8: B1 PhD (or other evidence of research training).B2 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Skills Essential: C1 High standard of communication skills both orally and written.C2 Ability to work as part of a team.C3 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.C4 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.C5High standard of presentation skills.C6 Ability to work independently.C7 Ability to provide medical and surgical veterinary care to patients in the small animal hospital.C8 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages. Experience Essential: E1 Post-graduate clinical experience critical care and/or internal medicine of a sufficient standard to meet the credentials of a clinical accrediting board. For appointment at Grade 8: E2 Record of clinical publications. Desirable: F1 Teaching experience at undergraduate level. Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 7/8, £39,347 - £44,263/£48,350 - £56,021 per annum, plus a veterinary supplement, depending on experience as well as an additional generous OOH allowance and employer pension contribution.
