THIS IS A 48-MONTH FIXED-TERM, FULL-TIME POSITION(WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION OR PERMANENCY) THIS POSITION IS BASED IN KENSINGTON APPLICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION CLOSE AT MIDDAY ON THURSDAY, 22 JANUARY 2026 The Marine Science Program aims to ensure the department's marine biodiversity conservation and management programs are based on best practice science. The program promotes and undertakes marine research and monitoring to improve the scientific basis for the conservation and management of Western Australia's state-wide system of marine protected areas, threatened marine fauna and marine biodiversity generally. Marine research and monitoring are based around the strategies identified in protected area management plans and threatened species recovery/management plans. We are currently seeking a Research Scientist (Turtle Monitoring) to join our team. This position will oversee the monitoring component of the Northwest Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program (NWSFTCP) including the co-design and co-implementation of nesting and in-water projects, with the assistance from other staff. The position will implement best-practice monitoring, including rigorous data collection and management, conduct data analyses, produce or contribute to reports and other communication outputs. The position includes a research component focused on the program’s priorities, including applied threat-based research. The implementation of field operations will be assisted by a technical officer. In this role, you will demonstrate to help drive positive change. Selection CriteriaApplicants should address the following five (5) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than three (3) pages in total. Demonstrated experience in conducting monitoring and research on marine turtles. Demonstrated skills in data management (essential), data analysis (essential) and population modelling (desirable). Demonstrated technical report and advanced science writing skills (essential), with a record of publishing marine science in peer-reviewed journals (desirable). Demonstrated communication and team leadership skills. Demonstrated remote fieldwork experience, including working with a diverse range of people.
