This exposure offers invaluable preparation for SALT postgraduate routes, giving you confidence in communication strategies, AAC, and early language development. Why this role is ideal for future Speech & Language Therapists: Extensive experience working with non-verbal children—giving you essential insights into alternative communication approaches such as PECs, visual supports, makaton, and sensory communication. Real-world practice applying communication theory, early interaction principles, play-based communication, and language development models. Daily professional contact with qualified Speech & Language Therapists, allowing you to observe therapy sessions and understand assessment processes. Development of key SALT competencies including receptive and expressive language support, communication profiling, behaviour-as-communication understanding, and communication environment structuring. Highly relevant experience for applications to MSc Speech & Language Therapy programs. What you will be doing: Supporting autistic and PMLD learners in lessons, therapy activities, and structured communication sessions. Using AAC tools, visual timetables, and sensory communication strategies. Encouraging engagement, joint attention, turn-taking, and interaction skills.
