This opportunity offers hands-on experience within a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) primary school in Kensington & Chelsea, supporting children with complex emotional needs — including trauma, anxiety, depression, attachment difficulties, and behavioural challenges. Many of the pupils have experienced instability, loss, or adversity, and may be vulnerable to disengagement from education or social exclusion. As part of the team, you will play a crucial early-intervention role, using trauma-informed approaches to help pupils feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn. This setting gives you genuine insight into the emotional and psychological factors linked to later youth offending risk — making it ideal experience for future careers in youth support, mental health, and the justice system. Work 1:1 and in small groups, providing both academic support and therapeutic, nurturing interactions. Support pupils experiencing trauma, anxiety, or low mood, helping them develop coping strategies and emotional literacy. Reduce risk factors linked to future exclusion or offending by promoting positive decision-making and belonging. Use restorative and trauma-informed techniques to support pupils through emotional distress, conflict, or shutdown moments. Encourage participation, learning confidence, and positive routines through patient, consistent, and non-judgmental support. Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and external mental health professionals where appropriate.
