We are recruiting Learning Support Assistants on behalf of a specialist education setting in Reading. This role offers meaningful, hands-on experience with children and young people who have autism, communication differences, sensory needs and learning disabilities. You will be part of a small class team, providing personalised support to help pupils develop independence, emotional regulation, communication skills and confidence. Whether you are an experienced support worker or a graduate exploring your career options, this role provides a structured, supportive environment to develop your skills and make a real difference. Learning Support Assistant Reading – Education and Training – Learning Support Assistant Reading Why This Role Is Ideal for Graduates This role is particularly suited to graduates in Psychology, Criminology, Education, Sociology, Social Work, Health & Social Care, Youth Studies, or related fields. It allows you to: Gain direct, practical experience working with children with additional needs. Build strong knowledge of SEND, behaviour, communication, and emotional regulation. Develop skills valued in teaching, educational psychology, social work, mental health and therapeutic professions. Work alongside teachers, therapists and multi-disciplinary professionals, giving you insight into different career pathways. Understand real-world behaviour, safeguarding and child development beyond the theory learned at university. Strengthen your CV and professional confidence before progressing to further training, postgraduate study or full-time roles. This is an excellent stepping stone for anyone considering a future in education, mental health, therapy, social care, or youth support. What You Will Be Doing Supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis throughout the school day Promoting communication, independence and life skills through structured activities Assisting with personal care, feeding or mobility needs where required (full training provided) Encouraging emotional regulation using gentle, supportive strategies Working closely with teachers and therapy teams to follow individual support plans Keeping pupils safe, calm and engaged in learning and social activities Your presence and encouragement can change a young person’s day—and sometimes their future. We Would Love to Hear From You If You Have: Experience in care, support work, or working with vulnerable individuals (paid or voluntary) A sincere desire to support children and young people with additional needs Patience, resilience and a calm approach when faced with challenges Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team A willingness to learn and develop professionally School-based experience is not required—your empathy, motivation, and willingness to support young people are what matter most.
