What They’re Looking For:
* Experience: At least 3 years of post-graduate experience with a local authority or conservation organisation, with expertise in biodiversity and green infrastructure planning.
* Passion: A deep understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and its application in real-world projects.
* Knowledge: A solid understanding of UK and EU environmental legislation, planning policy, and wildlife legislation.
* Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIS and other ICT tools for ecological assessments, plus experience in ecosystem services and natural capital.
* Qualification: Relevant degree or equivalent experience in ecology or a closely related field.
* Drive: A full driving license and access to a vehicle to support field-based tasks.
Your Role:
As Principal Ecologist, you will be at the forefront of protecting and enhancing biodiversity across the local area, working closely with the Council and a range of partners. You’ll lead on impactful ecological projects, provide expert advice, and ensure the Council’s processes align with the latest environmental standards, including the Environment Act and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead efforts to manage and increase biodiversity and natural capital.
* Drive strategic advice, influencing local and regional plans with partnered organisations.
* Review and enhance internal processes to ensure effective responses to environmental legislation.
* Provide expert ecological guidance through the planning process, from development management to Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
* Assess, review, and provide recommendations on biodiversity mitigation, BNG plans, and environmental impact strategies.
* Represent the Council at meetings with developers, planning committees, and appeals – be the voice of nature in decision-making
