Investigation Assistant (Criminal Law)
Pay Rate: £19.74 per hour, 36 hours per week, Monday-Friday. 2 days per week in office (Embankment/Charing Cross), 3 days remote.
Contract Type: Temporary (3 months initially with likely extension)
Reports To: Senior or Principal Investigators
Security Clearance: SC
Our client, a leading civil service organisation within law enforcement, is seeking a detail-oriented and highly capable Investigative Assistant to join their team temporarily for a duration of 3 months initially with likely ongoing extension. This position goes beyond typical investigative roles, functioning more as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal. The successful candidate will work closely with prosecutors and senior investigators, contributing to the investigation of serious and complex cases of fraud or bribery. Please note that this is not qualifying work experience.
Key Responsibilities
Legal and Investigative Support:
Assist in exercising powers under Section 2 CJA 1987.
Support prosecutors and senior investigators in case preparation and investigation strategy.
Provide assistance with disclosure obligations under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA).
Data Analysis and Evidence Gathering:
Manage large datasets, particularly using Excel, to amalgamate and analyse critical information.
Identify key evidence by reviewing substantial volumes of material and progressing lines of enquiry.
Lead the analysis and interpretation of financial data to uncover relevant information.
Case Management:
Plan interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects, to obtain written statements as required.
Participate in case conferences and update team members on investigation progress.
Assist in constructing case chronologies and maintaining decision logs.
Court Assistance:
Provide evidence in court when required.
Person Specification
Essential Skills and Attributes:
Strong knowledge of the criminal justice system or demonstrable interest in working within criminal law.
Proficiency in handling and analysing large volumes of information, particularly financial data.
Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Excel for data analysis and reporting.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise reports and evidence summaries.Desirable Skills:
Experience or knowledge of legal processes, particularly disclosure under CPIA 1996.
Previous experience in criminal investigations or a criminal law environment.
Familiarity with Digital Review Systems for evidence handling and intelligence gathering.
