Job summary This is an exciting opportunity for a clinical psychologist to gain experience in a flagship Major Trauma Service at North Bristol NHS Trust.
The post holder will also provide input into the Plastic Surgery service.
The post holder will be well-supported to provide specialist psychological support, liaison, and consultation to the multidisciplinary teams in the Major Trauma Centre and Plastics services.
There will be a major focus on providing direct psychological support to inpatients and outpatients.
The post holder will broaden and gain experience in front line areas of acute care.
The work is diverse, will provide the postholder with opportunities to work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues and broaden their links within NBT clinical health psychology.
In addition, Clinical Psychology input is very highly-regarded in both specialist departments; this is a developing psychology service where the post holder will contribute to the evolution of the role.

Main duties of the job The Post Holder will provide specialist Clinical Psychology input to MTC and plastic surgery multi-disciplinary teams within NBT.
The post holder will provide psychological expertise for the care of patients at all stages of the care pathways.
This extends to the support of staff and relatives, the promotion of psychologically informed and sophisticated systems of care and service development.
The role includes: o Providing support, training, liaison and consultation as needed to professional colleagues to further develop and support the highest standards of psychological care as part of the overall service provision o Contributing to the training and post-qualification training of clinical psychologists regarding psychological care of severe physical injury.
o Building close working links with the psychology service in ICU, the burns service, providing an option of cross-cover support between the posts regarding periods of absence whilst also collaborating on service improvement matters.
Also stablishing close links with the Bristol Centre for Enablement, Outlook, Neuropsychology including head injury services, and Medicine Division, including Psychology Liaison Mental Health and the Emergency Department.
o Contributing to the national network of MTC psychologists, collaborating on the advancement of coordinated and consistent care, across geographically separate services.
About us This role is of a senior practitioner with strong characteristics of collaborative working, managing varying and competing demands, the flexibility to work across divisional boundaries as appropriate, adapting to changing circumstances where unpredictable clinical challenges can arise that need an innovative approach.
The job entails a strong teamwork approach and the post holder will be able to rely on the close professional support of colleagues in adjacent clinical areas to ensure an integrated pathway of care for patients working across divisional boundaries, principally between the NMSK and ASCR divisions.
Job description Job responsibilities Knowledge, Training and Experience Required: 1.
Fully qualified as a clinical psychologist with a doctorate degree in clinical psychology or its equivalent as recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS) Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP).
2.
Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
3.
Knowledge of and experience of clinical psychology interventions in traumatic physical injury and broadly in clinical health psychology.
4.
At least the equivalent of one years full time relevant post-qualification experience.
5.
Extended knowledge and experience of the application of psychological models of health and illness for the purposes of assessment and treatment.
This is acquired through post-doctoral professional development.
6.
Knowledge and experience of establishing, developing, and closing therapeutic relationships with individuals, relatives and groups.
7.
Knowledge of the evidence base for psychological assessment, interpretation, rationale for intervention, and outcome evaluation strategies, as applied to the field of clinical health psychology, reflecting up-to-date knowledge of clinical guidance and relevant clinical research literature.
Skills Required: The post demands the ability: 1.
Personal psychological resilience for working with the often severe psychological distress of patients and their relatives during acute hospital care and afterwards.
This is the main characteristic and usually the main reason for people being referred to the service.
It encompasses a wide range including depressive withdrawal, aggression, post-trauma psychological effects, suicide threat, and manifestations of anxiety/panic.
It requires the ability to make appropriate use of clinical supervision.
The post holder is therefore required to have a high level of emotional robustness to be able to maintain a high degree of professionalism in what are often rapidly evolving clinical circumstances.

To be able to draw together multiple sources of assessment information, identifying critical components, in reaching an interpretation and rationale on which interventions can be planned and carried out.
This requires that the post holder will at times formulate a rationale for intervention where no evidence base has been developed.

To convey sensitive and complicated information to colleagues, clients and relatives, where barriers exist, such as the non-acceptance of personally devastating information to a client.
This is also a main characteristic of clients and the reason for referral to this service, where an individual is in severe difficulty facing a need for major behavioural/ emotional adjustment.
This requires the post holder to use the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills.

To know when to enlist other disciplines when to refer on ( for evaluation of psychotropic medication or regarding the management of risk).

To administer and interpret formal standardised psychological assessment procedures 6.
To effectively communicate the findings of psychological assessment and the rationale for interventions, potentially in an atmosphere of conflict involving clients, their relatives, and healthcare professionals.

To manage competing work demands in a rational way by organising and prioritising a patient workload with other pressures including supervision, training, governance, and professional commitments, in circumstances where these vary, can be unpredictable, and will often exceed the available time and resources.
8.
Competency for using IT equipment for the purposes of communication, record keeping and review, audit, and other matters such as test administration and scoring, communication, and clinical research.
9.
To provide individual and group-based therapeutic interventions using evidence-based approaches.
10.
To provide teaching/training on psychological matters to MDTs liked in with the MTC.
