Job summary The Bladder and Bowel Service promotes continence and the management of incontinence, along with all aspects of pelvic floor dysfunction through interventions by specifically trained nurses and pelvic health physiotherapy.The Clinicians provide an assessment and treatment service for patients with bladder and bowel dysfunction, following clinical pathways agreed by Consultants and GPs.The Bladder and Bowel service also assesses and provides continence containment products appropriate to the clinical need of the patient.The team consists of:Bladder & Bowel Nurse Specialists who are all advanced clinical practitioners in conservative therapies for bladder and bowel problems.Pelvic Health PhysiotherapistsHealth Care Support Workers and Business Support staff who work alongside the clinical team.Referrals are accepted from any patient with a GP within Portsmouth Post code area PO1-P06.
Main duties of the job To meet the needs of patients and their families to achieve improved health outcomes and promote health and wellbeing while demonstrating care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment.
Care is based on comprehensive assessment, ensures continuity and is patient/client centred, culturally sensitive and evidence-based and which promotes independence.Responsible for supporting the co-ordination of the work of the team, influencing clinical decisions and monitoring the quality of patient care provided through utilising and maintaining expert clinical knowledge relevant to own field of practice, underpinned by theory and expertise.Manage a caseloadSupervise members of staff and students on placementsTo provide expert advice and advanced clinical practice within the field of bladder and bowelTo provide specialist education and training to other healthcare professionalsTo develop and maintain a culture of service improvement which promotes quality and safety and striving to do better.This is in line with the requirements set out in the NMC code which require all registered nurses to: Prioritise people; Practice effectively; Preserve safety; Promote professionalism and trust.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential BSc Nursing or RN currently registered with NMCPost registration, specialist training relevant to specialityTeaching Qualification, ENB 998 or equivalentPractice assessor/supervisor Experience Essential Experienced in assessing and developing patient care plans Experienced in developing and delivering care and clinical interventions to patients Experience of MDT working Experience of teaching, training and supervision/assessing junior staff and students Evidence of recent CPD Evidence of developing policy, guidelines contributing to management of resources Additional Criteria Essential Clinically competent at Band 6 level Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, ability to receive and provide complex information which may be sensitive, contentious, where persuasive negotiation may be required and there could be barriers to understanding Ability to work autonomously; prioritise workload, instruct and direct others, work is managed rather than supervised; works within clear code of practice Problem solving skills Advocacy skills Teaching, supervision and assessing skills Dexterity required for intravenous and intramuscular injections, inserting catheters, setting up syringe drivers, removal of sutures, wound management Assess patient/clients plan develop/implement programmes of care conditions, using judgement when assessing /evaluating patients' conditions Ability to work as part of a team and support development of others There is an occasional t requirement for physical effort manoeuvring patient and moving equipment Frequent need to deal with managing emotional issues Ability to adapt to change within work situation There is a frequent requirement to manage unpleasant working conditions body fluids Understanding of the health needs of people in their care and health promotion Understanding of a range of clinical approaches Awareness of research and evidence-based practice relevant to clinical area Articulate and knowledgeable of current professional nursing issues Knowledge of health promotion Desirable As a Senior Nurse to be able to demonstrate specialist knowledge of bladder and bowel diagnosis, treatment and advice Awareness of the market for continence products and keeping up to date with new products
